Short scale bass with a chunky neck?

Post by kbit »

As y'all know, I dig short scale basses, my Mustang bass being my favorite bass I've owned thus far. I like the feeling of the neck but sometimes I'd like something with a thicker neck profile (i.e. more material between the fretboard and back of the neck). Does anyone know of any short scale (or even medium scale) 4 string basses that have a fairly thick neck profile?

The only one I've found so far is the Starcaster bass which feels really good, but I'd be interested in learning about others.
Also my mustang bass only has 19 frets so a couple more would be sweet, too.
Not really gonna buy something right now, just figured I'd ask :)*

Never played one of these (always wanted to), but pretty sure the neck is chunkier than a Mustang:

Also, there's probably some fine vintage Japanese jank that'll fit your bill.

Ahhhhh I didn't even think of reverend, good call. & it has a pickup blend circuit! I gotta try one of those out now.

I should be on the lookout for vintage Japanese stuff, too. I'm always weary of their playability but I'll just have to look at ones I can play before buying.

Yeah, those Reverends are a little on the pricey side (for me), but they're quality.

With the Japanese stuff, you have to know what you're looking for. (So, yeah, definitely best to play before buying.) There's lots of stuff at the lower end of the quality spectrum that isn't very playable.

Yeah the reverend is probably more than I'd drop on a bass, unless I came into some money and had one in my hands that felt too awesome to put down :idk:

Gretsch Junior Jet is fairly chunky and the price is great!

The Fender Pawn Shop reverse jaguar Bass is chunky as fuck but with the reverse body its hard to get up high on the neck.

I really disliked the reverse jag I played in store before. The pickups were suuuuuper weak. The upper neck constraints did have me passing up the Gretch but they go cheap, I'll keep my eyes out.

Thank you all for the responses!

My '78 or '79 Musicmaster bass has a really fat neck compared to my Mustang basses. It's my favorite by far.

Doesn't have any more frets though.

^ I'll second that, the Musicmaster Bass for sure has a nice fat neck and the Mustang is very slim and 60s/modern.
