Unknown Pleasures is a weirdly challenging album that took me a while to really process. Now it's one of my favorite albums. Not that I think it's for everyone.

The same kind of goes for mid 80s The Cure. At the time I got into that stuff I was just kind of motivated to delve into that sort of thing.

Follow up question for this thread: are you more likely to be put off by an album that sounds to "good/clean" or "dirty/lo-fi?"

For me (and I would guess many here), it's the former.

Unknown Pleasures, IS one of my favorite albums, but it would have been nice to hear what they really sounded like if you saw them at the very least.. a lot of music I like is either too "good/clean" or "dirty/lo-fi" and no it isn't "that" off putting but... it does at times get in the way of what is actually there in terms of performance and songs.

either. depends. if it just sounds like shit and you know it was a mistake because noone could possibly make it sound like that on purpose thinking "oh this is going to be a great sounding album", then it's the latter. I don't mean stuff like Raw Power, that's purposeful and pretty awesome

if it's too clean, it can turn me off just as much, ALTHOUGH I've noticed being more tolerant to "overproduced" music as it gets called quite a lot. I love The Dear Hunter or anything Steven Wilson does, but yes, those could easily be viewed as too clean but I don't care...

so in the end I think it's rather the latter

There is so much rad music out there that I will definitely avoid listening to stuff that is good but with shit production.

If it's a band I love then I may be more lenient, but poor production (over or underproduced) usually stops me from getting to the point that I love the album enough to get past the production.

Because fuck the sound of that record.
Sterility kills all the good songs and it sounds like all the interesting parts were turned into intro/outro fodder or bridges.
That may also belong in the Unpopular Opinions thread, but I hate the sound of that album with venomous rage.

I used to hate the sound of the new HoF, but after a couple of listens I'm ok with it. I don't listen to Snakes for the Divine as much as I should because it's too.....slick.

All of Lamb of God's albums sound like shit except for their Burn the Priest stuff.

Also, re: Joy Division, I love the production. Martin Hannett was one of the great British rock producers. That sound was all his, his vision, that spacious, darker take on the '80s sound. Great little video below.

Um, what? I think eschewing royalties in exchange for an allegedly unpaid (but who knows) six-figure bill and the opportunity to only deliver one record on a four(?) album deal with an "indie" to go after a deal with a "major" (why are you even quoting these things?) is a choice that the band made but it's hardly, you know, unprecedented or even (arguably) unreasonable. Dunno how you can dilute it down to such an oversimplification, but you might be chasing your coffee with bleach again or whatever it is you do that makes you so "special".
