super fuzz fix
So I think I still want some nasty super fuzz action
What do you animals think of a bee baa vs a foxx tone with the octave off? have a bass micro synth I'm on the fence with too... Or I might just go balls out with a laowhiz build.
I've been eyeing the ibanez standard and fm2 as well.
Have a terminal, demo tape fuzz clone, rat clone and a bunch off muffs
Some boosts and may be more
Really wanted to build a more modular version with stomp boxes that was more dynamic but it's got out of hand...

Um as far as I know Bee Baa =/= Superfuzz.
You like Electric Wizard, I think. You could look for an FZ2?

Re: super fuzz fix
Bee Baa is slightly based on the super fuzz or has some slight relation with no octave from what I have read but it is far enough away to be something different.
Ibanez standard fuzz is good. Tons of standard fuzz rebrands with wah (and without) that can be picked up cheaper like Jax, Apollo, and Marlboro. The LAL 46 is a great, heavier super fuzz. You've got to kind of like the two eq settings with all these though (scooped or mids). (I have a Jax 8tr fuzz wah, beebaa, Ibanez Standard Fuzz, and the LAL 46)
Foxx tone machines I have played are more treble, high mids harsh kinds of fuzzes (including a laowiz outsound one). They are really different beasts than a superfuzz. It's a lot more noisey than a superfuzz, but just as great in its own way.
FZ2 like D.o.S. said is a well reguarded one too.
Beebaa is the most "normal" or all of them and the foxx is the most wild and harsh. It all just depends on taste...(I like them all)
Heaviest/best/most gain: LAL46
Good vintage sound: Standard Fuzz and its friends
Harsh/Treble/more octave: Foxx
Best all around for riffing and fun: Roland BeeBaa (didn't like the black cat or barge as much)
My wife took the 46 for bass so I've been using the beebaa and Jax more (I like the wah overtone on it...)
If you are really just looking for some good octave up sounds and wild/fun fuzzes check out the LAL Octavella, the Katanasound Venomous Snake (pretty good less wild sounding closer fo a foxx but based on the octavia), or something like the infanem second voice. I personally prefer the beebaa and superfuzzes though.

Re: super fuzz fix
BeeBaa & Standard fuzz (sans clipping diodes) are two of my favourite sounds. However they are, in my opinion, almost completely dissimilar.
I like the standard circuit (again, with diodes switched out) as an authoritative clean boost/OD, and the AF-100 circuit is a more capable fuzz. Been about 15 years since I've played with a true Roland BeeBaa though, so all I have on hand are replications of the circuitry utilizing more modern componentry.
That's just my way of saying I may not know what the fuck I'm talking about.

Re: super fuzz fix
The Bee Baa is great, and probably has the tightest, biggest bottom end of the bunch. There seems to be two variations of the Bee Baa, the earliest ones have no power supply filtering and use different silicon transistors, and would be considered "nastier" than the smoother sounding later run Bee Baa's. I have an earlier one on my board.
The FZ-2 is a nice box, so much so that I have two on my board. Although my favorite mode is the boost w/ parmetric eq. Fuzz II mode does the E. Wiz fuzz + ring mod thing that sounds pretty evil, and mode I would be your typical superfuzz like tones.
I didn't jive to well with the Verellen Big Spider or Guyatone TZ-2. Too loose and splatty for my tastes.
Never played a Foxx Tone Machine, but know Brent Hinds used one, or a clone of one all over Mastodon's Remission and love the tone he gets out of it for the intro of Crusher Destroyer.

Re: super fuzz fix
I have a Foxx Tone Machine that Colossus built and it's fucking awesome. Super heavy sounding and with the octave up it's really noisy. I like it best on bass.
I've had a couple of FZ-2's and the Fuzz II is evil sounding and one of the better fuzz tones I've ever used. I really need to get another.
The Earthbound/Acid Age Pale Mare is a Bee Ba clone I think? Those look really cool.

Re: super fuzz fix
I don't get along too well with fuzzez that are too splatty, harsh or scrambly, and/or don't handle chords too well, and/or don't play nice with my other dirt. Also, a 'real' superfuzz doesn't have all that much gain imo. Or at least it's got 'different' gain than say, an FZ-2, which isn't that vintage sounding or whatever, but it sounds bigger/fuller and indeed obviously very electric wizardy
The FZ-2 is ridiculously cheap for what you get, sounds more menacing and nasty than the average superfuzz clone, it gets a lot louder, and has three modes and a parametric eq...
As far as the tone machine goes: The joyo voodoo octave (or whatever its called) is supposedly a small mod away from being a spot on clone. So that's a cheap way to find out if a tone machine is your thing. Another similar sounding cheapo would be the Dano French Toast. There's higher quality clones out there too ofcourse, as I'm sure you know.
And if it's a top notch killer superfuzz clone you want: Wattson is the shit. Maxon too for that matter, but it doesn't have the same mojo nor the affordability
My personal choice if I were in the Market for a BeeBaa (which I might be as soon as I get my shit together): BAT Black Sheep.
I've got all the components and even the pcb ready for an end all be all FM2 clone. God knows when I'll ever find the time to put it together

Re: super fuzz fix
Ok this helps a lot
Been out of practice and need to get this going again
Sounds like a bee baa is in my future and have been talking to mark
Love my supercollider
So an ibanez or foxx for the crazy fuzz octaves
Not a fan of boss pedals and know about the fz2
But can't do it
though need to be on the cheaps as much as I can
Now to figure out if the bsm stays or gets knocked off
It's modded for separate voice and filter sections
What would you choose between that or ibanez or a foxx tone
Fuzz!

Re: super fuzz fix
If you want more octave up and a harsher fuzz the foxx is the way to go. If you want something more mild and with a significant amount less octave (but still really good sounding), the standard fuzz is the way to go.
Personally, both...they are so different. But if I really had to pick one, and I had a beebaa, the foxx.

Re: super fuzz fix
I'm gonna toss my hat in for the smallsound/bigsound BUZZZ. It's super fucking versitile and sounds really good at low gain settings and high gain sethings.
I love the Tone Machine circuit. The octave off setting has a great mechanical fuzz sounds to it and the octave is pretty harsh and treble, but in a good way.
Both of these are sweet for bass.

For an awesome BeeBaa fuzz talk to morange. He released a BeeBaa based fuzz pedal a few months ago called the Nolk. Great pedal at a really good price. He's in the Shark Tank under the name Effect Banks. Very good builder and a great guy as well.

Re: super fuzz fix
ok hell yeah
And indeed I love the wizard
But going to do some things very different
But the foxx sounds like me
And think nin and mastodon used them
Think I want a bee baa to maybe replace my ratty
and want to try the ibanez or fm2
So maybe the buzzzz?
Thanks dudes!
