This wouldn't be *too* rash, would it?

Post by waltdogg »

I have a Gibson Les Paul Special DC with a faded/satin ebony that I picked couple weeks ago and it rules. I've been playing it a fair amount but the satin finish isn't wearing as much as I'd like it too. I searched and I searched but I couldn't find anything but the exact opposite (wearing too much). So I ask you guys, could I just leave my guitar out on my balcony on a sunny day and let the UV rays work their magic? Tell me if this is normal or dumb or if there's a better way, please. I know I have to play the guitar and that's what I've been doing I'm just trying to see if I cant thin the finish a bit to accelerate the wearing process. Thanks.

Go on the keto diet so you're sweating acetone. Then play in a hot room.

It doesnt so much wear as it just gets really shiny. This is probably more of a TGP question though.

When it comes to the nitty gritty playing comfort modifications, try the TDPRI. I don't read it so much anymore but it pops up on my searches all the time when I have a question akin to yours.

You've got it the other way around. The shininess *is* the wear. When the paint fades the remaining nitro gets buffed shiny over the now bare wood like what happened to my other faded/satin ebony LP Special. That guitar was already all beat up, paint fading with the nitro starting to get shiny over the bare wood when I got it. This DC Special is pretty much brand new. TGP would tell me I'm crazy for trying to age what is essentially a NOS 2006 DC Special.

Guess I'll be registering for TPDRI, lol. Coz nothing came up from them in my google searches.

A little more google-fu and maybe I should just polish the shit out this thing? My luthier friend says a sunbath won't really make this happen.

I thought nitro finishes specifically were what aged well in the sun?

The finish yellows when it is affected by sunlight I don't know about it fading the pain though. I'm 99% this guitar sat in the sun for a minute though before I got it, the tuning keys are a little yellowed but none of the paint on the head stock thinned.

Yellowing varies on the type of nitro and most importantly the clearcoat used.

You could just piss all over it.

I kid, I kid.

Just play the thing. It'll have wear fast enough.
