hifi system ?

Post by sylnau »

I'm looking for a new system for home.

What you guys (music lovers) have at home to listen to your favorite music?

Sorry breaux, I'm of zero help here. I listen to a Crosley turntable hooked up to some Logitechs.

But I can tell you I just about died of GAS when Verellen announced their integrated tube amplifier a while back.

Don't think the Kickstarter was successful though...

Lately I've been going all vintage, and enjoying it. Solid state receivers from the 1970s aren't that expensive, but they sound golden. I've also been able to pick up vintage speakers for a song. Even with just running a cable from the headphone jack of my phone/tablet, it sounds far better than the majority of crap out there today, especially in the price range I'm working with. For example, right now I'm running a late 1970s Akai integrated amp that I bought for $40, through a pair of Mission bookshelf monitors that I bought for $20. The 1970s amps and receivers are all gorgeous with their silver facings and lots of glass and lovely VU meters dancing around...the cool aesthetic lends itself to enjoying the music, IMO.

If the whole vintage thing isn't for you though, something like a B&W Zeppelin is just fantastic. I have one of those as well, and it sounds remarkably close to the quality I got from the last time I had a whole audiophile sound system that cost 10-20x more than the Zeppelin.

If you've got the $$$, go ahead and grab something like a SimAudio Moon integrated amp and a lovely pair of Totem speakers and you'll have a system that'll last you for life, but IMO it is more fun to work the vintage route.

Of course, if you need audio for like a home theatre system as well, then all this advice goes out the window.

I was thinking about Rega Brio-R + DAC-R.
But not sure about the speaker... floor standing or bookshelf.
Monitor Audio or Sonus Faber.

I like music too much!!!

Fuck me that would sound nice. Monitor Audio makes some NICE speakers, the Silver range is awesome. I *slightly* prefer Totem to Monitor, but really you can't go wrong with either. And one of those paired with the Rega...schweeeeet.
