the frequencies created by a bass guitar and the ones created by a regular guitar are completely different...
many bassists use a D.I. for recording and on stage as well but I doubt there's anybody here who'd say that a D.I. is just as good as a real amplifier for their guitar.
just because something works for one type of instrument, doesn't mean that it works just as well on another.

I think basses and guitars are a lot closer in terms of frequencies and what sounds good than you seem to think. A bass is just a single octave down from a guitar, its not that huge of a difference. Whenever you're playing on the D and G strings, those are right in the same range as a guitar.
bigchiefbc wrote:And most bassists use DI because they're FORCED to, not because any of us think it sounds good. I think it sounds terrible, especially if you're using OD/dist/fuzz. But bassists are not usually given a choice. I have never yet had a soundman agree to mike up my bass cabs. It's always DI, and I don't get a say in the matter. That's one of the shitty parts about being a bassist: soundguys do things the way they've always done them, and they fear any kind of change. But DI is not the same thing as going through a solid-state amp. Solid-states still color your tone. Whereas DI is no coloration, by default.

elbandito wrote:If you have access to an oscilloscope, plug yer bass in and hit a note. Then repeat with the same note on a guitar. You'll notice that the bass is a much smoother sine wave than the guitar is. This can create a bigger difference in sound than you think.
elbandito wrote:Well you've had some shitty/lazy soundmen... my bassist uses his amp onstage at every gig. But he's a big Polish dude and it's likely that the soundmen are afraid to fuck with him. You should put your foot down and tell the soundman to do his job and let you do yours. You should be comfortable with your sound so that you can perform your best, I feel... and that means using your own gear (unless it truly is crap).
elbandito wrote:I wasn't trying to imply that SS amps and D.I. are the same, because they obviously aren't. In recording situations, for example, bass sounds best when run direct. This is a fact, due to the difference in the way bass notes resonate - again, refer to the osciloscope. Recording direct and then re-amping (in one shape or form) is the way to get killer bass tones in the studio.

I completely disagree with you on this. I don't see how you can say something is "a fact" when it comes to something subjective, like what is killer tone. I personally HATE the sound of bass when its direct, especially when you're using overdrive/distortion/fuzz.
