ensmarten me on video projections

Post by behndy »

yooooooo.

SO. been meaning to get a handle on this stuff for awhile, trying to buckle down now.

want to do some video loops at home then project them behind us whilst playing. don't want it sync'd enough that we need to use a click track, ideally would love a few vid loops per song, have some (midi?) way to hit NEXT LOOP for riff changes.

was looking at pico projectors like this -

http://www.amazon.com/Tronfy-Entertainm ... e=UTF8&qid

murrrr?

what's the easiest way to have a sheet on the back wall of clubs to project onto? would prefer a mounting to the wall solution, not a frame if possible...... trying to stay as small and less space takey as can be.

murp?

Not sure on your midi/footswitch thing, but assuming it's going to be hooked up to some sort of modern device, look at the resolution. You want 1080p, not the 800xwhatever that thing is.

Can get away with a lower resolution, but it'll not be a good, fun lo-fi thing, just blurry.

That's about the end of my knowledge on the subject for live use - my era was the overhead projector and a plexi vial of oil and colors!

Fuck modern projections, DO THIS INSTEAD~!

Really though, LUMENS are like WATTS, you cannot have too many, but you can have not enough. 1000 is not enough for any venue that has to also have a lit emergency exit sign and is not someone's lightless basement dungeon.

Beyond this, I have no helpful input. I've always borrowed the gear and done super primitive stuff, but it's fun as hell.

Get a video dude to run the stuff if you can to be honest.

Or just have a big loop running with random shit and play with it.

Nobody will know. Nobody.

I'm a vidya guy for a living (designer/animator), bud oddly enough it's never crossed over into my music world.

From what I gather though, you can do some of this stuff on a really basic level with programs like VLC and I imagine QuickTime. There are some pro apps like QLab that offer quite a bit more features, and I think Max might offer some of this kind of thing as well.

As mentioned, 1080p is a good res to aim for projector-wise, but I bet you could get away with 720p (1280x720) if you wanted to go the inexpensive route.

Rendering your files in a streaming-friendly codec like h264 will keep you from running into any hiccupy playback. Please post what you end up doing--I'm curious!

This thread is relevant to my interest.

I'd love to project stuff like what resincum has done for the drone comp. But I have no freaking clue about any of this stuff.

I watched a doc somewhere about the 1960s psychedelic projection guys (might have been on here). They got an overhead projector and a thin tray of water then put oil (like cooking oil) in there. The heat would make it move around and the would come by and put dye or something in there and let the colors swirl.

I would try to find businesses, colleges, and churches that are getting rid of stuff for a good venue sized projector. A lot of theme bars buy them too. I'd scour around with your contacts and see what you dig up. Sometimes those old floor three color ones come up in random places (saw someone using on as a coffee table a few years back), but those would require a hand truck or something. Another thing to take into consideration is that sometimes the bulb is worth more than the projector or at least extremely expensive (so some of them have warmup rules like the lights at a stadium).

Only reason I mention churches is that they like to spend...I think they've got to like balance their budget or something (tax reasons) or they just like cool stuff. One of the churches in Bakersfield a co-worker worked at just gave away a full 32 or something channel SSL board for a new one just because. The old one was in perfect condition. (they also had two sound guys on payroll). Places like State Farm have whole rooms of perfectly good stuff that they just store because they "upgrade" (got my first computer that way).

I did see a guy loop two VHS vcrs with like a 10' tape loop over a table with a camcorder recording on one and the other playing via projector. It would record the projection and then reproject it on the wall like a tape delay...and eventually it built up into some cool stuff. I think he also flipped things some how too. I can't find the video, but it is somehwere on Vimeo...it was cool and kind of freaked people out because they had to talk through it to enter and they kept reappearing on screen walking across in different angles. I think he was tilting the projection. But if you can rig something like that up, I think it could be pretty cool.

Hope you guys come up with some cool stuff...

While VJ'ing I've enjoyed using Modul8. Though I've always been there to be the Video Person and changing the loops and making magic happen and stuff like that, I think it'd be kinda easy to get a sequenced loop thing going there AND you could make videos react to the music played. Like when stuff gets louder the videos go faster or zoom in or stuff like that.

I've always wanted to do projections on a sheet in front of the band like a curtain. Maybe out of a light cloth that is semi transparent/opaque.
But I am a massive wanker.
