Ahh okay, yeah, not anything there's much of a solution for either because underground scenes and radical spaces are exclusive by nature and largely self policed

Yea, that whole thing gets really old. Same thing here...just go out sometimes or for a friend's show.

It might even be worse in LA compared to my hometown (sorry, forgot that part haha)...everything is a secret. You aren't my friend, you can come stuff (or even know about it). It was always exclusive and I was always somewhat an outsider haha.

Last "underground/punk" show I went to (Forward/Long Knife), I knew not one person there. Tried to talk to a few people. One dude and I mentioned that Run the Jewels were pretty interesting/entertaining. Some dude started jump on me saying it was shit and all that because it was corporate rap. He was already pissed that I brough up Charlie Harper when talking about the lives of old time punks when they get old...kept saying that Harper is a rich guy that got enough money from guns n roses and he was just a pop kinda star. haha. Yea...I've met him, looks like he works himself to death touring to survive...(even though I think that is what he wants). I don't even care for the UK SUBS anymore but jeez...then he goes back to complimenting the cool guy that liked Run the Jewels too. Just lame shit.

When I was leaving, I asked this other dude if there were any good shows coming up and he mentioned EYEHATEGOD. I asked "Where is it at?". He was like, "Oh you didn't get the invite" or text or something...lame

I know it isn't exaclty the same thing, but I think it is within the same mentality.

The varsity football comment was pretty good though, D.o.S.

When he memorised the lyrics to those songs, what exactly was he thinking? Like... "Ah, I've got it. I know the true meaning of 'Understanding In A Car Crash.' Ol' Geoff was telling me to raise the price of AIDS drugs by 500%. What a great songwriter." Fucking pisses me off. If you're listening to emo but you're not living it you're not true emo at all, not true punk at all. (Cf. School of Rock .gif posted earlier in thread.)
I think you're trying to look at this and say, "man, I like those songs but I don't want to associate myself with this douche." Then you look at D.o.S. statement...

This is exactly how somebody got into those bands. Brand New was being playing on MTV in 2004/2005. It's easy to use the internet at the time and pull up some website like Absolute Punk and read all about that. And here are these guys and they're mostly singing about girls and heartbreak and angst. It's pretty easy for any kid to get into that. It doesn't mean that morally he's going to turn out to be an okay dude.

What the guy has done is deplorable but there's no need to say, "how can he like the same shit as me?" I don't think that "separating the artist as a person from his/her art" is exactly the sentiment here but I think there's some comparison.

Yeah, what a strange fucking phenomena that you can go to a show, not knowing anybody and try to be like, "hey man, I'm here, I'm part of your varsity football team, why the fuck are you trying to ostracize me?"

Going to shows is a fucking popularity contest, it's a goddamn joke. I've been fortunate to strike up conversations with some nice people but maybe it's a byproduct of my location more than anything.

Yeah I mean I have met loads of really great people at shows, it's just a phenomenon within a group of people who sort of allege to define themselves by being accepting of atypical. Hardly any kind of unique insight, but it is hilarious.

Most of my good friends that I still have I met at shows and through "the scene. By no means is everyone a scenster asshole. The dudes in Forward were awesome (even though I know it is in there best interest to be nice to fans...but a ton of bands have just been elitest pricks). It is funny when watching from a distance though...

Love these guys sound but they do have less variety than the Ramones:

Great record:

I've posted both before...but I love 'em...so  :thumb:

I completely disagree. There's bigger shows with kids in fidel hats dropping hard f bombs and pretty white boys rationalising their latest bout of being a sex creep with 'emo' songs, but there's also smaller shows that are largely by, and for, femmes, weirdos, freaks and queers. They can be cliquey and exclusive, hell yeah, but when you're trying to make a space for people who don't have one sometimes you have to be. They're not perfect and full of hypocrites, but as a weirdo freak queer in highschool those shows with ten or fifteen people at them were the only place I felt I could be myself.
