NPD: Mini

Post by popvulture »

Not really sure what I can add to what's already been said about one of the most lauded pedals on ILF, but...

Holy shitballs! It is all of the good. And pink. I am beyond happy...

Possibly more coherent statements to come.

Been gassing for one of those for ages. HNPD!

I know it's a long shot, but I can't resist: Dibs on the flip?!

Haha, I highly doubt this is one I'll ever flip, just because I tend to hang on to a lot of ODs for variety's sake, and this one's particularly unique.

But yeah, for the past little bit I've been having some major annoyances with ODs I'd been trying. Ones that I own and previously liked have been majorly disappointing me, to the point where I wondered if something had gone wrong with my ears. Example: Spaceman Aphelion... absolutely loved it when I tried it and ultimately bought it, but recently felt like I couldn't get a good sound out of it. My biggest beef is that so many of them sound too midrangey, regardless of EQ setting—I like a bit of cut for sure, but my preferred overdriven sound has a wider range, less of that midrange focus. This was a problem with the Aphelion... sweeping the tone knob really didn't seem to give me much variation at all.

I was immediately impressed by the Mini's range, and I absolutely love the bias knob. Separate treble and bass is a great feature as well. My favorite setting so far is with the gain around probably 1-2 o' clock, with the bias dialed back to around 9, so it's starting to get a little chewier but not sputtery.

A little later in the day, I ended up going on a jog and putting on the Dismemberment Plan's Emergency and I. The guitar tones on that record are some of my favorite ever, and I couldn't help but think that coincidentally enough, the Mini does a great job of exactly those types of sounds. Nice gain, but still plenty of clarity and chime.

That probably sounds wanky, but it's what I've got. Maybe it makes sense—who knows.
