I'll have to 3rd the iPad.
Lots of great synths, drum machines, and effects.

I am not in too much of a rush to purchase the hardware. I will be downloading some apps to tinker before hand. But I see myself as a more "hands on" than a virtual player.

Patterning is the best drum machine around, hands down.untilshewokeme wrote:I am not in too much of a rush to purchase the hardware. I will be downloading some apps to tinker before hand. But I see myself as a more "hands on" than a virtual player.
As for Effects, Flux:FX and Effectrix/turnado are both great. filtatron is fun too.
I'm a huge fan of Thor, Cyclop and Animoog for synths.
Hexaglyphic is your one stop drone and noise maker, but Soundscaper and iDensity (buy the apesoft pack 1) are also great for droning.
For sampling Samplr and Egoist are where it's at.
Other than that Loopy HD is great for random music sketches. and Cubasis for full tracks.
BUT, if you really only wanted to buy one app at first to get started making iPad beepdoops, just get Korg's Gadget. It'll hold you over until you can get the other stuff here.
Edit: as for the hands on thing, midi controllers are your friend.

So much to say here but get some apps and Audiobus and look at the Arturia Beat Step Pro... The Audiobus forum is pretty cool...untilshewokeme wrote:I am not in too much of a rush to purchase the hardware. I will be downloading some apps to tinker before hand. Or just get a Circuit...

Seems easy to make Drones and Beats and Tweak...

I will be sure to check out everyone's app recommendation this weekend when I have sometime to mess around.
I like the Circuit for the fact that is does it all but the big downside is the lack of a traditional keyboard. I think if I were to want/focus on one thing first it would be synth.

Been messing with apps on the iPad the past two weekends now having some fun and getting the hang of things.
Picked up a Minibrute today for a offer I couldn't refuse. It will be a nice first step. Now I'm going to keep an eye out for a SR-16.
