A band you once hated but now love

One day.
While this quote is completely incorrect on the face of it, it did get me thinking: have there been any bands that you had a total change of heart about? Hated your whole life only to listen to later in life and realize, "Hey, I see why people like these guys! They're pretty fucking good!"

For me it's been a lot of them since I joined ILF, i.e. Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, and David Bowie. You guys are expanding my horizons, just like any community that you join, I suppose. But I'm actually listening to Ziggy Stardust right now and realizing how good it is. Don't get me wrong... I'm not a total pleb. I even own Ziggy Stardust on vinyl. But I thought it was merely okay, whereas, no, it's fucking excellent.

Prior "conversions" include: Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones

Or, did you ever have a band people tried to convert you to/sell you on, but you just weren't feeling it, no matter how hard they pushed it? For me, that'd be Simply Red, Icarus Line (don't worry Space, I'll get there), and Jesus Lizard...

Anyway let's hear your stories of a) stopping worrying and b) learning to love da bomb!

Radiohead.
I thought they were all about the Creep and the Paranoid type of songs. Glad they stopped doing that stuff long time ago.

Meshuggah. Falls of Rauros. Blind guardian.

I wouldn't say I hated any of those bands, at all, but they definitely took longer than average for the penny to drop.

Black Flag is the band that everyone I grew up around tried to convince me to like (and people still do every once in a while). Never got a long with 'em. The Locust is another one. And I know everyone will kill me for this but Queens of the Stone Age. QOTSA have a few awesome songs (great, catchy, good sound, really really good songs) but, to me a lot of trash (but the songs I do like I really like).

MGMT was pretty stupid and annoying (really, they pissed me off) but I kinda learned to love those two or three good songs they have (the rest of that first album is trash).

Misfits are a band I recently rediscovered. They were fun on a mixtape back in 1994 or something but were never anything beyond that to me. Picked up Static Age recently and love it. Realized part of it was the lack of availiability of the Misfits back when I got into punk and the weird remix/post-production stuff (some of it sounds really bad). Eh, man it was all the fanboys that bothered me. Don't know.

Minor Threat is a band I loved back in the 1990s but got sick of them (or maybe straightedge as a scene?). Recently got out my old record and loved it again. 15 years for the win?

Buck Owens was so annoying when I was a kid. Country = dumb and cheesy usually. But I learned to love my town and 'ol Buck. He's got some great songs and nothing beats "Streets of Bakersfield". Really good catchy tunes (sometimes).

Slade, The Sweet, and a lot of 1970s rock is something I have learned to love and appretiate recently. Something about good fun guitar rock that has my attention these days. Maybe it is influenced by playing guitar more (actually trying to play)?

Kicked it with the real hardcore goth scene in the clubs down here in LA and have a great deal of respect for that scene and music now. Never thought I would say that

Bands I once loved but can't really listen to or stand anymore: UK SUBS (which is sad...) and KMFDM.

My absolute disgust for Pearl Jam has only grown larger and more seething over the last 25 years. haha. Don't know why.

I wouldn't say I love them now, but My Chemical Romance was a band that I absolutely hated in high school because I hated the people that liked them.
I'm pretty down with some of their stuff nowadays.

Ah man, I love Bright Eyes and My Chemical Romance. I also get why someone might not like them. Conor Oberst's voice is like nails on a chalkboard, but if you're feeling it, then that's okay. I think My Chemical Romance were the best of the Jersey post-hardcore pack in the early 2000s. Yeah, they went pop, but they stayed true to their aesthetic... and the best thing about that aesthetic is, it was never manufactured or handed to them by a label. It was Gerard, all the way. A comics writer and artist today, so there's that. And the guitar, man. Frank can shred like few pop-punkers can.

Anyway.

lordgalvar, who said that? There's this famous quote about The Grateful Dead, something to the effect of, "I like the band. it's their fans I can't stand." (Maybe D.o.S, maybe you know?) Anyway... a lot of bands fall under that umbrella. All classic punk bands, all jam bands, a lot of metal bands... hell, a lot of emo bands.

Did I tell you guys about the guy my wife knew in high school? My wife and I didn't meet until university, first year. Our first conversation was about Conor Oberst and his bands. She told me about a guy she knew that bought all sorts of rare, OOP Bright Eyes vinyl, just to put it in a glass display case. He started dating a girl she knew, only to break up with her because, "You make me happy, and that's just not emo." I swear I'm not making this shit up.

Who said what? What are you refering to?

As for the scene comments: I was just refering to when I was a kid and I got sick of the straightedge kids starting fights with everyone. And Misfits fans were usually Metallica fans and kinda bro-ish back then. Don't care about scenes or anything anymore (but some level of access to music when you were a poor, dumb, street kid in the 1990s was who you kicked it with...I hung with people that liked Subhumans and Conflict...so yea, a lot of that is shaped by the "scene" or was at least). None of it is all that logical (except for the exposure part)...it's just the way it is/was///I listen to what I want, haha.

I really liked the first AM album, back when they lumped in with the current "dance rock" genre trend. I admit that after that album, I got annoyed by how many superlatives the UK press was throwing up about them and lost interest. What is it with the UK press thinking every new British guitar band is Jesus incarnate? It's like they're a whole nation of casecandies or something! LOL

I even really liked the line
