Re: pop punk
My friend irrationally hates Modern Baseball for literally no reason, but he really hates them. Bro solidarity.
Either way, Japanese pop-punk is superior and has been since the 90s.
Shipyards is my favorite current Japanese pop-punk band. These songs get me.

Well, you need not sell me on the virtues of Japanese pop-punk, emo, post-hardcore, post-rock, post-metal, etc. Preaching to the choir.
But you should be telling your bro you hate Modern Baseball, then listening to them and attending their high-energy shows on the d-low.

BRO: What, uh... whatcha listening to, bro?
*pause*
STRANGE: Nothing, like, Kyuss and shit

Love this; actually one of my favourite songs of all time is on that album, "Theme Song for a New Brunswick Basement Show," one of the best non-metalcore breakdowns of all time, coupled with the most monumentally emo lyrics I've ever heard.Muff_Diver wrote:
Hands up if you were one of those kids in high schoolThe basement's filled with kids I don't know
Not beautiful like your songs
But all awkward and alone and don't belong
EDIT: And college
And as an adult with a job, wife, and kids

Re: pop punk
Two thoughts: a) Add my voice to the pro-Descendants crowd
b) Joyce Manor is top-calibre. There's a lot of good pop-punk and emo revival stuff out there right now (running towards a glut) but they're a cut above the rest. Short little albums you can process for days, listen to over and over. Every time they play in Montreal I'm unable to go

Shameless self promotion https://occupytheoccupants.bandcamp.com/ but heres my old pop punk band.
I'm going to echo the early Joyce Manor. I think Never Hungover Again is a weak effort except for Catalina Fight Song though and wish they would play fast again.

I feel this, but I think that they release enough music that you'll see them veer back in the other direction soon enoughBoatRich wrote:Shameless self promotion https://occupytheoccupants.bandcamp.com/ but heres my old pop punk band.

I'm hoping them and Ceremony both do that. I'm less hopeful about Joyce Manor though because they've gone to pretty good lengths to alienate the earlier hardcore crowd they used to play with/cater to.casecandy wrote:I feel this, but I think that they release enough music that you'll see them veer back in the other direction soon enoughBoatRich wrote:Shameless self promotion https://occupytheoccupants.bandcamp.com/ but heres my old pop punk band.

True. I mean, it happens whenever a band "gets bigger," they start to lose their sense of place, their sense of sceneBoatRich wrote:I'm hoping them and Ceremony both do that. You know what was an excellent show recently, was Lemuria and Kind of Like Spitting
Kind of Like Spitting were so chill, there were only 30, 40 people there (in Montreal LOL...) but he described the place as "blowing up" and you know what? It felt like it, too.
