Well I just think it's fun, but this is a very legitimate criticism
For people in this thread unversed in the ways of Mr. Adams, his prolific nature as a songwriter is pretty much unmatched
Most fans haven't heard 100% of the music he's written and recorded. It's close to impossible LOL
There are literally hundreds of unreleased songs and b-sides, most of which aren't very good, some of which are amazing
So yeah, given the production, he could have easily cranked this album out in a day or two
This having been said, like I said, I enjoy it a lot, it makes me smile

The funny thing is, in a roundabout way, they're both originally country artists who muck around in other genres
So it's kindof appropriate
Yeah I mean I didn't mean that as harsh criticism because I love his style and I do think the album sounds lovely, it just doesn't grab me. But yeah I'm not upset about it or anything, I love Ryan Adams and part of what makes him great is how he's always making whatever he wants, recording some weird thing nobody asked for. This album is cool, and definitely worth a listen. Whole album covers are always intriguing to me.

On a bit more listening, I do also agree with odontophobia that some songs probably work better than the originals too.

I would still not listen to TSwift's occult 70's titties.

If Taylor was like, "Yo, God is dead, witches rule the earth," I would buy the shit out of that record. Or cassette. It'd probably be a great cassette.

the 'white dude with 'indie cred' covering female pop artist to make it okay to like' thing is kinda lame though. That said I haven't listened to it and won't because David 'don't call me Brian' Ryan Adams was rude to me in a guitar shop like a decade ago so fuck him.

She wears short shorts, I wear the customary black ceremonial robes and pentagram talisman of my order.
She's cheer captain, and I recently sacrificed a goat to Yog Soggoth in a blood orgy while intoning "DEATH TO THE FALSE BLONDE GODDESS! MAY YOU OH UNBEKNOWNST TO US MORTALS WRITHING BELOW BREAK BOTH OF HER LEGS FOR HER HUBRIS!"

Granted, it's not as catchy

I've started reviewing stuff I've liked cos of this thread. Will post my findings eventually.

But until then I will say one thing.

Theories. Regression.
I cannot believe it is a debut. So insanely good.

Absolutely agree with you about the first point, I hate that sort of thing, if I didn't like the original album I would have thought the exact same thing about it. "Guilty pleasures" are the lamest idea ever though. You like tswift? Just rep it, don't wait for someone "cool" to cover the songs.

yeah. It seems both kinda sexist and also snobby in a way that it's saying that small business rock like ryan adams is somehow more 'legit' than pop music. But eh this is a debate a lot of much smarter people than I are having.

Here's the thing... I won't deny liking some of those Taylor Swift songs. I think, on a whole, that what she and the producers decided to do with some of those songs really made them less of what they could be. Thanksgiving last year when my wife made me listen to it on repeat for most of our drive to my folks place my biggest complaint was that certain songs felt like there wasn't much substance to the music/production. Something always felt missing. The record felt sparse in its instrumentation. I always found it lacking.

I must admit, outside of knowing that a lot of people like Ryan Adams I haven't listened to a Ryan Adams in my entire life. My wife really likes him and was jazzed about his interpretations of the songs coming out so I gave it a listen. I thought it was fun.

So if you had asked me 6-weeks ago if I knew all the words to "Blank Space" or "Bad Blood" I would have answered yes and not a single fuck would have been given.

It's weird to me that there is a blowing up on the web about any of this being "sexist" but people do all kinds of weird things and there are probably people giving credence to the sexist aspect or even the "more legit" aspect. I, on the other hand, will sit and simply enjoy each album for what each album is and leave it at that.

People who don't understand why the 'serious' music they enjoy needs to be taken 'seriously' often stress over displaying any enjoyment over music that they don't think is 'important.'

I don't think anything I enjoy is unimportant. If I'm enjoying it then it has value. If I don't enjoy the music it doesn't suddenly lack importance for somebody else. I'm not going to try to invalidate it by simply saying it sucks.

Sure, but I'm not sure that's entirely related to what I've said.
