Re: I need a delay now.
If you just need something simple, Boss DD-5,6,7? MXR Carbon Copy is also a pretty good standard delay. I absolutely adore having Reverse delay though, and the Warp and Hold option on the DD-6 make it a mainstay for me.
Might be able to score a Catalinbread Belle Epoch at that price, and might even see a Catalinbread Echorec if the stars align.

Re: I need a delay now.
Personally, I would go with the DD-6 (or 5 or 7 or 3 or even the DSD) like strange tales said for the hold...but I really like the DOD FX94 too.
Minifooger Delay is a possibility. Maxon AD-9 can be had for that price if you want to go analog. That waza craft boss could be had too if you want to control d.time and they supposedly sound pretty good. There is always the digitech digidelay too.
I didn't like the CB Echorec...but other people love it (it just got drowned....the Mr. Black delays did too but they may be too specific anyway). Ibanez AD-99 was not good to me (very weak mix, very short delay).
You'll find something good. Tons of options these days.

Re: I need a delay now.
I do not use a ton of delay, but I miss my old Vox delaylab. sounded great, and I liked it much better than the x4 I had.
The kilobyte delay sounds really cool too.
I've had dd7's etc and they're great. Will look into that again. I did not like the carbon copy much.
I used to be ALL about analog delay, but I don't really care much now.
Most of my ambient stuff comes from my Red Panda Context

Yeah at that price point it's really hard to narrow it down without knowing what kind of delay you want.

Re: I need a delay now.
If you're dead set on getting something boutique, I can't really help, but as far as far as cheap analog delay goes...
You maybe ever tried an Ibanez ES-2? Tap tempo, a second of delay time, modulation, oscillation, mojo side panelsation,...Not to mension the delay time is real time tweakable. Not sure they had this in mind when they designed the pedal, but that fader is super easy to slide up and down with the tip of yer foot
Another one that caught my eye, though I haven't had the chance to mess with one yet: Seymour Duncan Vapor trail. The wet send/return thing seems A LOT cooler than the usual cheesy onboard modulation that lacks control over the main parameters of the modulation. No idea why the Vapor Trail doesn't get more love.
The Carbon Copy is nice, but ehx has a couple analog delays that cost a bit less and don't sound super dark like the cc.
I don't know if a used WH Supa Puss would be within your budget, but that might be a good option as well.

How much are TC Electronic delays? Not the X4 ones?
I have an Alter Ego X4 and love it.
I think the Alter Ego and Flashback would both be great...

DE-7 is without a doubt the best bang for the buck delay imo.
