Noise Music

Post by louderthangod »

I'm not the biggest fan of that term...it seems as silly as "Sound Music" or "Sound Bands" but I'm going with it for now. Some people go for a sort of anti-music, deconstructionist sound...purposely avoiding conventional sounds, structures and formats while others are just trying to reinvent the wheel and express themselves in ways that may or may not sound at all conventional or familiar. I think I'm more in the second camp but then again I enjoy experimenting with sound for the sake of novel sounds as well. I'm hoping we don't take this in an elitist, genre-subdividing discussions but what are some of your favorite releases that loosely or otherwise fit this sort of off the beaten path yet not quite something else sort of sound? I'd like to expand my listening of these bands/artists and maybe get some inspiration or even just enjoy some work I'm not otherwise familiar with.
I tried searching for similar threads but didn't find one so if one already exists I'd gladly join that discussion instead of adding a redundant thread.
“I'm not an abstractionist. I'm not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I'm interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.”

On phone, so take your pick.

But I do sort of remember a noise discussion. Like there was the chick who went under a MBV moniker? I have nothing to contribute.

We argued talked about HNW in this thread but it was by no means a noise thread exclusively... I'm not really on top of the genre but I like Merzbow, Wolf Eyes, Masonna, Muslimgauze, Nurse With Wound... and also Venetian Snares, that's breakcore I know, but still pretty noisy... John Wiese too.

Prob. my favorite noise record (samples of instrument noise and feedback from punk shows):

This music sounds like an old broadcast playing in perpetuity for ghosts on a haunted, derelict spaceship adrift in deep space:

I don't think NWW gets brought up as "noise" very much but they're noisy enough for me.

D.o.S. turned me onto Vomir. I like the idea of Vomir (after lengthy argument over his merit as an artist). Cool art project. Not sure it's something I'd sit down to listen to. Watch me get flamed for this LOL

:thumb: the importance is if you like it or not… all time fave recording is Killer Bug your wife is mine :thumb:

here is Killer Bug on The Pain factor a SF public access show that MK9 and my cousin did in the 90's :thumb:

:idk:

I was not there for that one but anyway going to a taping of the show once in like 96 is where I was introduced to noise… I have enjoyed it ever since… really though I think digging and exploring for your self is better than me saying something is good or not or whatever or not or something or not :!!!:

Cabaret Voltaire, Neubauten (even the early stuff), SPK, etc. are not noise music. If it had to be a genre it's probably be early industrial or something like that. Actually [harsh] noise music is not something that I like to listen to by myself but it can be interesting to see it performed live (with earplugs because fuck you, tinnitus). When you remove the performance aspect, meh. At least in my not so limited experience.

If you're into interesting but different music and don't know these artists yet, try some Alva Noto, Ryoki Ikeda, Pan Sonic (and solo stuff by Mika Vainio) for example.

CV's Attic Tapes (free form rambling, feedback, noise, with a few dance tracks) were in parts, as was parts of the later CV (Conversation, International Language...even though it is in a dance format but very non-convential and done in different ways with different sounds) albums. Never said they were pure "harsh noise wall". Neubauten got more song-writerish later but they were way more chaotic and free form than stuff like Test Dept (similar idea, in a structured format). Yea, later Neubauten lost that edge, but just putting something out there that isn't the same five we always talk about. So what if they were technically in an industrial scene.

Sore Throat and that whole noise not music almost grind stuff isn't technically "zero-feedback mixing" but that is what they call themselves and they were doing something different for their time.

Anyway, I try never to get trapped by labels anyway, but I was more refering to louderthangod's comment about looking for more non-convential song creation and all that.

Defektro is good too. Too each their own though and there are a lot of good suggestions in this thread.

"Nothing good can come of arguing over what genre a given artist is," he said, with a whiff of self-disbelief, and more than a little hypocritically.

See you are trying to drag me into an arguement that I ain't even in, CC. I have said several times that I ain't into sub-genre craziness and just call things broad terms like "metal" or "hardcore". I make jokes every now and again about taste, but usually leave it at that.

I'm not going to be dragged into any stupid arguements...I just like hearing other people's music suggestions.

So quit trolling casecandy.
