This just popped up...mildly interested, but I have no cab, and dunno if it's been serviced. He said "no hum, no worries " but I just serviced my vibrolux. ..caps go bad.
Is the price too high,or in the ballpark?

V4/V4b are awesome amps but that price is high as fuck.
If you are patient, you can snag one for $600-$700 and if you aren't patient around $800.
A few years back I got a V4b w/matching 215 for $550.

Yeah, I thought that. I'm not even really looking for a new rig, but it caught my attention. Because of how clean the outside is, I doubt he's likely to budge, let alone trade for gear.

For that price (or maybe just a little more) couldn't you get one of the new ones? I haven't heard how they stack up to the old ones and you wouldn't get the vintage mojos but you'd probably have something more reliable than an amp that's been sitting in someone's closet for 30 years.

Ehhhh, I've heard of problems with the new ones and reliability. Also, used they go for the same price, so that speaks a lot to me.
That is in fantastic condition, probably got the original tubes too, which would be like $400+ for the quad EASY if it is in unused condition, I'd have him check for you. As for a cap job, definitely. Caps dry out and having spent most of its life in a closet means a definite cap job plus an update to a three prong cable. Definitely get more pictures for that price, have him pull the chassis and take some good shots of components.

Ya if it hasn't been serviced, that is a little high. The right person might buy it for that but old amps need maintenance and caps are a must.

Right. I'd be looking at servicing it, plus procuring a cab...probably gonna let this one slide.
On that note, I'm primarily a guitarist but like the idea of an amp that works for bass as well, like this one. What kind of speakers would you recommend, that could handle bass, but sound good with guitar?

Eminence of some sort? Or old Altec Lansing speakers. I think those came in the old v4 cabs from the 70s.
I had an ampeg vt-22 I fixed up that came with Altec Lansing speakers and I shouldn't have sold it. Awesome amp.

Re: Ampeg v4b
I use my V-4 for guitar or bass and I've used the V-4Bs that I've had for guitar. The V-4B is a little bit darker coz of the input caps, that's about it. And I've never paid more than $500 up front for a V-4 head so I just kinda scoffed, laughed and closed that link.
