I can't help how I feel, the one time I saw them was very U2 like, I didn't say I hated it but having slayer, them, Rob Zombie then Black Sabbath as a line up did not work well...

casecandy wrote:Many, many thoughts on that. I don't think that he holds any of the homophobic or misogynistic views of the church or its current leaders. I think he got into it for the P&W, which he does well. Mars Hill was founded by one of the most liberal pastors in America, Rob Bell, who declared that Hell doesn't exist and God just loves everybody in the end. Of course, that kind of hippy-dippy thinking led to clashes, and he left the church in 2011, after Dustin joined. His successor Mark Driscoll was just the worst (I don't wanna get into it but as usual Wikipedia has you covered), but he resigned last year and the new leader, Ed Dobson, is relatively progressive (openly gay son in the military, voted Obama because "it's closer to Jesus' teachings," etc.), and personally, I think DK was just waiting it out. Probably a lot of politics we're not privy to. Mars Hill is general is like a cult though, yes. Very toxic church culture, at least in the original Michigan one. Anyway, Please Come Home is a fantastic album. I cover "Blood & Wine" at virtually every open mic I play and I'm proud of it LOL
I live in Grand Rapids which is basically where Bell and Mars Hill got their start. It's strange to me. West Michigan, as a few other Michigan-ites can likely attest, is very strange in its religious ways. CRC and Mars Hill seem to be at every corner. It's all kind of weird to me. I know lots of people who attend(ed) that church. I don't get it. Very cult like. Huge staple in the youth movement which is terrifying as they up the hate. :idk:

Anyway.

This thread has been derailed by arguments but whatever. I'll contribute because this is nostalgic as fuck.

To up my "apparent" anti-religion sentiment I present "Dr. Doom, a man of science, doesn't believe in Jesus, why the fuck do you?" by Curl Up and Die. The end of this song has a stupid "snare into china" part that wrecks me every time.

This track is definitely not in the metalcore mold. Recall listening to this track a lot during the big "white belt" grind phase in 2004 alongside with some ventures into that early aughts late 90s screamo shit. It's just that synthy swell into that break... goddamn. Me and Him Call It Us was cool as hell.

I have a huge soft spot for metalcore, especially the spastic breakdown-y kind. All of the Converge, ETID, and Norma Jean in this thread is making my day.

Curl Up and Die is fucking sweet, also, when are we going to start calling the current crop of super heavy hardcore bands metalcore? The first two Code Orange Kids releases are fucking bangers while still being really interesting. Also, has anyone mentioned Zao, early Cave In, etc...?

PeteeBee wrote:I was super into Comeback Kid as a youth. Was a big part of picking up a guitar. That's breakdown city, although not the best of breakdowns. I just can't handle the formula now. Like I can still get worked up and pogo and pickup change and all that, but the music has to be more unpredictable and wild to really get me pumped. When I think Metalcore and anything with core in the name really it's a fight against predictability.

Saw these guys recently. This is what my love of hardcore a decade ago led me to:

Comeback Kid is so fucking good, Wake The Dead shaped my early high school years. OAF is tight

I try to avoid mentioning Zao at all costs personally.

I think I'm the only person in the world who thinks that until your heart stops was the weakest of those late 90s technical Deadguy aping records.

Zao was okay. Don't freak out. I didn't say the best band ever. I said okay.

If you're going with "Heavy Christian music" they aren't even in the Top 10, though.

Strongarm though, that's some serious youthgroup mosh
