People seem to really like pocket pianos and volca stuff. Any other suggestions? I know barrrrely anything about piano so I have no idea for real classic sounds or the ability to mimic anything in particular. I just want a way to play notes simply without straining my wrist. I'm even considering a little drum machine just because that seems fun... like maybe pocket piano and volca beats? Idk, what are you guys using for your occasional keyboarding? I have an iPad I could use as well, but somehow that takes a little of the fun out. I'd rather have fewer tonal options and not have to plug in the iPad. I do however want to run it through my pedals and out the amp, because I love them.

Toe Dipping into Key Boarding
Sooooo my wrist pains keep getting worse and worse. I think i need to take a break from guitar outside of actual band stuff to attempt to get it to heal. I want to get a keyboard of some sort to keep the little tunes and dabbles flowing.

ipad controller definitely seems like the cheapest way... and I already use the iPad a lot for drones... might just suck it up and go that route.

depending on what kind of wrist pains you're getting you may want to avoid 'proper' keyboards and look more into minikeys/buttons/touchscreen control surfaces.
i played piano before i started guitar and whenever i go back to piano my wrist pains are several times worse. i guess it depends on a few things.
something like a microkorg or a casiotone will sound awesome through pedals, as will the pocket piano. volca keys sound great but a ribbon keyboard may suck if you're trying to play more complex things.

Re: Toe Dipping into Key Boarding
Something with good tactile feedback will make a world of difference. Pressing virtual keys on a screen is not super nice, in my experience. And I love my Volca Keys but I wouldn't necessarily recommend that to someone as the only way to play keyboard/notes...
What's your budget ?
If you already have effects, anything that has a simple enough sound can be processed to death and beyond to get cool sounds, as mentioned previously. Not all effects will work nicely with keyboards (some are designed for guitar levels and dynamics) though.

I'd say budget is probably $300 before I have to really do some saving to make it happen. I think the touch response will be a big part of me enjoying playing it. Even if it's just pushing buttons pocke piano style. There is just something not fun about playing a screen. And I definitely want more tonal precision than a ribbon thingy. I played some of those tiny korgs and it was fun for minute but not what I'm looking for.

Re: Toe Dipping into Key Boarding
Are there some specific kind of sounds you're interested in (i.e. realistic sounds or pure synthesis, etc.) ?
Do you want polyphony (i.e. basically do you want to play chords) ?
Do you want to be able to tweak the sounds a lot ?
$300 is definitely enough and depending on your needs and the other gear you have you might only need to spend a fraction of that...

I would definitely like some polyphony, but if that comes at the cost of loosing a rich tone then maybe not. I think I prefer synthesis versus realistic sounds. Looking pretty hard at the c&g bolsa bass, but I'm sure there are things that can do that for cheaper in a less cute package.

I want to say Behders has/had a Bolsa Bass, so you might want to PM him for somethoughts on that.

Re: Toe Dipping into Key Boarding
+1 this, big time. I play guitar and keys, and have had mild carpal tunnel symptoms off and on over the years. In my case at least, playing keys is much more of an aggravator. The tendency with keys is to flex your wrist back, which is much more similar to the problematic position of holding a mouse, another frequent cause of CT... so just be mindful of that!backwardsvoyager wrote:depending on what kind of wrist pains you're getting you may want to avoid 'proper' keyboards and look more into minikeys/buttons/touchscreen control surfaces.

Re: Toe Dipping into Key Boarding
What does the doc say? Does it do it with all guitars/basses?
I get what you're describing within minutes of playing a Tele or guitars with thin import necks of yore. Others don't have that problem emerge.
I'd consult the doc first and play with phone/pc stuff in the interrim.

I'll try to track down a doctor and get an opinion. That does make some sense that keys could aggravate. I just did a long drive (30 hours over 2 days) and when I was done my wrist was the worst it's ever been. I only mention because it was in a similarish position as a keyboard but pretty different from guitar or the espresso bar, which is what the repetitive motion injury is from.

Bolsa Basses are TITS. really fun. i would never want one for live shtuff because they don't remember the last setting you were on and don't have save spots. but FUN.D.o.S. wrote:I want to say Behders has/had a Bolsa Bass, so you might want to PM him for somethoughts on that.
i ran an ipad live for awhile. pretty solid and some amazing apps for it. you can get one of the small 1.5 octave keyboard controllers for butt cheap. hell, think i have an extra little USB keyboard i would send you for the shipping cost if you wanted to try the iPad route.
