Vocal effects live...especially deep reverbs

Post by louderthangod »

I just started doing vocals in a project I'm working with and I've got a Boss VE-20 but the reverbs on there don't really give me that deep, lush sound like a Chelsea Wolfe, King Dude a lot of other folks these days. Any ideas what some of these people use or what else might work (preferably something with XLR in/outs)? Multi effects would also be cool...I like the 2 and 3 voice settings on the VE-20 but I have no problems ditching it for something better. I'd like to use this both live and on recordings for whatever that's worth.

TC helicon voicelive 2, or the new one they came out with. Amazing vocal pedals with everything. EVER-RY-THING.

Chelsea Wolfe definitely uses a Digitech Digiverb and a Boss RV-5

Don't believe me? I took this picture:

Just get some DI boxes and run your mic through pedals. Then you can be one of those cool guys with the pedals on the floor and at chest height. Plus, you've got an excuse to get more verbs.

Well there you go. How is her live sound? I've only heard her on record. Obviously each room is different and will play a big factor in the sound.

USB seems like it would have some latency and have a bit of a struggle keeping up live... but maybe with the right computer/setup it'd be okay.

I have a FireWire interface that I feel like I could pull it off if I had a portable computer that was capable of doing so... not that I need it.

Surprisingly, No haha its tight as. That said its only a 2 channel interface (high quality too) into a mac pro. Very solid. Although they do use so much verb/delay/filtering I dunno if you would notice any latency... Ha

This is something I've been planning to do, with a Dr Scientist RRR and/or Bit Quest in one (or both) loops of a Pigtronix Keymaster.

The Keymaster will give me access to whatever finds its way into those essential fx loops, whether using rackmount mic pres+LDC...or dynamic mikes with an old Altec tube mixer/PA.

Be aware that on some of the TC/Helicon stuff the phantom power CANNOT be switched off, which may wreak havok with your rig depending on how you use it (48v into another effect box, no thanks!). Friend of mine alerted me to this after he nearly toasted a ribbon mic pre/psu.

For what you're describing, I'd just gun for something with 100% wet and toss it into the mixer sends. Cheapie Lexicon, old Alesis if you want easy and no real tweaking, etc.

The only problem with this is that SOOOOOOooooo many "sound guys" at clubs have no clue about how to use the sends/inserts on the mixer. If its not a 1/4" or XLR cable straight into the board their face goes blank.....!!!

Any club that doesn't know how to run inserts on a board probably is one where you're going to end up running your own sound.

Do we think this would work like I want it to? I just want to run my mic to a couple pedals on my board then run it out either to my amp or the PA depending on where I'm playing. Or if there is a cheaper/easier/smaller product let me know!
