No...

At least Prodigy had a couple decent songs... there is nothing redeeming whatsoever about Sublime...

What?

See you're not really contributing anything to the discussion though.

Okay... in my opinion, "Fat of the Land" was ehh at best... the tracks without Keith Flint (and the preceeding albums) are best. I don't know if anyone can argue that it was the beginning of the end for The Prodigy... there were far better groups that made music that still holds up, whereas FOTL sounds incredibly dated now...

And Sublime were awful...

FOTL was overrated to begin with so the answer to your question is no. Never understood the hype, even back in the day.

Sublime, while also completely overrated to the point that you could make the mistake of hating them for their strung out frathouse fans, were not awful.

And then there’s the soundtrack. What a collection of hits! It was like Braff clickwheeled through your third generation iPod and cherrypicked your favorite songs from your indie music playlists and wed them with some classics like Simon & Garfunkel. Imagine the thrill we, the CMJ-attending LiveJournalists, felt about the novelty of hearing an Iron & Wine song in a big theatrical release. And covering the Postal Service, no less!

Also, who could forget the Shins scene? Portman took off her oversized headphones, because she’s a music lover, and told Braff, “You’ve gotta hear this one song. It’ll change your life.” He listened, and we heard “New Slang” capture the moment. Braff was the director who could turn you on to your new favorite band.

Garden State was released 11 years ago, and in 2005, for a nation of coddled adult babies, it was the indie snoozefest that had been done to death several times already and would be done many more times as a result of its success and would likely star Zooey Deschanel and/or Michael Cera. It was a movie for those of us who felt bad for ourselves, thought a lot about how we felt bad for ourselves, and sat around talking with our fellow self-feel-badders about how we felt bad for ourselves.

And then there’s the soundtrack. What a collection of shit! It was like Braff pulled a bunch of rejects from a Wes Anderson movie and mashed them together with the fitting room tunes of Urban Outfitters. Imagine the thrill we, the unfuckable indie rock nerds, felt about having our boring tastes pandered to in a big theatrical release. And getting away with it, no less!

Also, who could forget that fucking Shins scene? Portman took off her oversized headphones, because she’s so deep into that alt life, and told Braff, “You’ve gotta blah bluh blah bluh bluh. It’ll bleh blah bluh your blah bluh.” He listens, and we realize that this is an entire movie based around listening to a fucking Shins song. Braff was the guy who tried to get in your pants by making you a mix CD.

LOL I just read that yesterday, it showed up in my FB feed.

Funny, for sure. (VICE content in general is top notch or at least entertaining)

And yet it's just part of larger trend where it's become extremely fashionable to hate on that movie.

No, it's a culmination of the fact that pretty much everyone has realized the movie was garbage except for a few special snowflakes.

Random 1:
After 20+ years of ignoring them (too much good stuff out there and I never really checked em out outside the mixtapes I had from 6th grade), I've been getting a kick out of some Misfits (the only era that matters, Danzig). Had no clue that "Legacy of Brutality" was overdubbed and always wondered why I couldn't find an album other than "Walk Among Us" in stores (this was 1995)..."Static Age" was released in 1997...just a nutty history for such silly and funny music. Digging the songs though...forgot how catchy and dumb/vague/nonsense the lyrics were. Oh, "Bullet"! So yea...never thought I would say that I was lovin' some "Static Age".

Also, out of the hundreds of times I have heard "Where Eagles Dare" live or on recording...never really paid any attention to the "omelet" line and I got a good laugh out of that (actually all of the lyrics...or maybe just two decades of dust on the memories and changed listening habits let me laugh).

Random 2:
Also, why in the hell do the Vibrators get less mention than their contemporaries? "Pure Mania" was awesome and had some great hits. They inspired a lot of punks (Stiff little Fingers and Exploited to name a few) but I always seem to be the only person that really likes them in Southern California. But the Adicts are huge down here?

Random 3:
Why does Jet (I know they are long out of the current pop spotlight...but they are still in radio rotation) get radio play when there are great bands like Giuda out there doing something in the same (well, kind of) spirit but much better, catchier, and with more fucking fun? Mostly just wanted to say fuck Jet...one riff shit. Yes, I know this is the age old argument (like why this guy and not the guy they stole from...but fuck Jet). (not really that angry or care about Jet...they were just the first one I thought of when listening to Giuda and talkin' with my wife).

Random 4:
"Sister Christian" is one of the worst songs ever written.
-Ring Mods!
"I make you chocolate"

Fun fact - The noise/bomb/explosion you hear at the beginning of their 2nd album, V2, is actually a V1 rocket, not a V2 rocket. Hopefully someone got fired because of that. That's up there with the circular saw sound at the beginning of the Ramones song Chainsaw.

Didn't know that about the V2/V1 (never thought about it).

I just assumed the Ramones thing was because a chainsaw can sound like a weed eater or lawnmower and a circular saw sounds cooler. I think it adds to the goofy character. Love the Ramones.

Never seen Boogie Nights...I honestly kinda gave up on movies after seeing the Carpenter classics and Strange Brew...I don't think those can be topped.

Sister Christian goes on way too long and gets way to much play. Went to Florida; had to drive all over Florida; every radio station not based around the Pitbull Discog was playing sister christian every hour.

"Sister Christian" just sounds like the song that the couple with tinkerbell stickers on every window of their house and astrovan picked for their first dance at their wedding.

(sorry to tinkerbell fans out there....but there is a limit)
