Though I don't like Sugarcult (whyyy), I am familiar with that feel, and especially find it reassuring when classic rock/jazz/soul snobs hate on and discount the music I like. So yeah, I am kind of a snob, but I do have both a confident and a vulnerable emotional stance on what music is GOOD and will gladly argue (mostly good-naturedly) with anyone on why the bands they like are BAD. I've had endless hours of fun and frustration shitting on the classic rock and prog that co-workers are into, and trying to convince people to stop listening to Brand New and Green Day and discover real punk. And I have also enjoyed being lectured myself about bands I've underestimated and passed on, and it has lead to some yay discoveries.

On the other hand, if you're not really thaaat into music nerdery, and don't claim to be, I can well respect that and just be content to discuss whatever weird pop shit you like and try to find common ground. I do got those guilty pleasures... casecandy, I know you know who Copeland is. I will, with a sense of slight nausea, claim that "In Motion" is an awesome album, though I cannot justify the expense of owning the LP. My record collection is too core for that christian stuff.

Yeah Sugarcult was a horrible lapse in judgement.

Don't you fucking dare dis a band because they're Christian!
The Chariot is one of the heaviest, most chaotic bands I can think of, and they were Xtian.
First off, Beneath Medicine Tree is twice the album In Motion is, and both are worth owning on some medium or another.
Second off, pick an album from random from Brand New's discography, and it will be better than the best Copeland albums (unless it is Daisy, I guess).
You could a lot worse than Brand New... and yes, I realize you mentioned them as comment bait! I bit.
Third off, Xtian bands are my bread and butter...
Underoath, The Rocket Summer, mewithoutYou, Thrice/Dustin Kensrue, Dashboard Confessional/Further Seems Forever, The Juliana Theory, Sufjan Stevens, Starflyer 59, The Chariot, Norma Jean, some Emery, etc.

Do NOT come in here and say you don't think mewithoutYou isn't a good band.
Aaron Weiss is a multidenominational millennial prophet and it's as simple as that.
Also FYI I'm not Christian myself. I'm a very spiritual person but it's a big psychedelic cosmic kind of spirit. Hail Yog Sogoth, &c.

One day casecandy is going to have his Conversion on the way to Damascus moment and light all his shitty albums on fire before rolling around naked in the ashes.

One day.

You are my one true friend on this website! :yay:

Well, you and whoever it is that has a gif of I think either Tegan or Sara biting her lip in his sig.

Everything about the band is so well thought out. Once way back in the day someone was criticizing them like, "Great, another emo band name all one word with random capitals." And I was like, uh, ACTUALLY, "me" is the religious follower, whereas "You" is God, so there's a reason that one is capitalized. Furthermore the name is one word to represent unity between the two, which is ironic, given that the name is "me without You." So it APPEARS that the religious follower is without God but in actuality they are united.

They looked at me like I was way too turnt and, in retrospect, no, you cannot be too turnt about mwY

Um You'd Prefer An Astronaut is an awesome album, in heavy rotation lately

I can't pretend I was always way into them or anything though, they were an ILF find for me

I already had my Demascus moment. It was the first time I heard "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't" by Brand New. In 2005, in Sussex, NB, in my wife's (then girlfriend's) car, whipping around doing loser laps. That guitar kicks in and, well, how the fuck could you not be converted?

It's actually been an abbreviation for Christian for a long time, at least a hundred years or so (appears in Aldous Huxley's writing while in Palestine, for example). The Romans used to persecute the Christians and one way to secretly identify each other in public was to draw a line in the sand. Then the other person would draw a line across it, making the Roman numeral X, 10. The logic behind "Xmas" as an abbreviation for Christmas is the same.

Yeah, that guy, he likes mwY! That guy.

Also, final comment I swear, mwY cannot properly be called a Christian band. At best, you could call them an "Abrahamic" band. When they were born, there mother was Episcopalian Christian, and their father was Jewish. Neither converted for the other. At some point both their parents converted to Sufi Islam. So they were raised with all the Abrahamic faiths and express those ideas in their music. Sufism is probably most prominent in their music overall TBH.

Despite all the people killing each other over religion in the world, there is WAY more in common between Christianity/Judaism/Islam then there are differences. Furthermore there are a lot of similarities between the Abrahamic faiths and the other world religions. At some point, they're all about the dissolution of the ego. That's my take on it.

Yeah they're all fucking garbage (suspiciously akin to the music being discussed in this thread. Divine coincidence perhaps?!)

LOL

Religion is not garbage; you just have to read the texts for yourself and find your own meaning. Constructivism. Whereas most religious followers accept blindly what the intelligentsia of their faith give them. And most of them don't even really believe it anyway. Making them hypocritical. And that hypocrisy turns most people away from faith. Whereas if the average person of faith had their own personal thing going on based in the tradition, then it would be different...

If you read a good translation of the Bible (say Jewish Publication Society 1989) with no pretense, just as literature, and do your own thing with it... it can be something pretty awesome

D.o.S., mewithoutYou is not garbage. I can't think of many more bands that are as intellectual, with as much to say, etc.

I believe that you can't think of many more bands. I also believe that you think religion isn't garbage. I have lost count of the times that you have said things that you believe which are, in all likelihood, categorically false, and am averse to continuing to point it out.

Tools of social control are just that. Shitty emo bands are just that. Spewing a mouthful of word salad does not change that, sorry.
