Another vote for Mahavishnu. That was some pretty gnarly gateway stuff for me. Also worth noting that Jan Hammer's cheese festival-style keys are now back in vogue. Dude was a genius, even if he sounded bad a lot of the time. I used to work at a drum shop with a guy who worshiped at the altar of Billy CobHAM (at least that's how he pronounced it).
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

Does the more jazzy side of Canterbury prog count?

Yeeeaaah. I've been getting into Soft Machine lately.

Does Mats/Morgan count as JF?

Don't know if this one counts because it transcends fusion:

I like jazz... but not fusion.

I used to listen to fusion a lot when I was like 18, wanting to be a shredder, waiting anxiously for the next issue of guitar world to arrive in my mail box. Holdsworth, Tribal Tech, Dixie Dregs..etc. Stopped playing guitar for like 8 years and never listened to it again after stopping playing guitar. Can't remember a single song or melody from any of it. Except this Jeff Beck album, I can remember a lot of the stuff on it. That and Blow by Blow.

Yeah, those guys are Dutch. I've been listening to a lot of library music lately. Finding lots of groovy sounds. There's a pretty large fusion/library crossover. I used to kind of write off Europeans when it came to funk, but 50,000,000 hip hop producers can't be wrong, right?

… and here's some always fabulous Pat Martino:
