Jaguar/Bass VI pickups
So I'm looking to swap the pickups in my pawnshop bass vi to a three singlecoil setup and was wondering if you have done so yourself, or maybe you've played a bass vi with aftermarket pups or swapped em in your bass vi? Right now I'm leaning towards these Novak 1961 Bass VI, they look incredible though to be honest I'm not sure if I'd need to have a custom pickguard cut for them? Plus they are 160$ a pup.... His regular bass vi pups look interesting too, I've been happy with all of the Novak pups I'm using. Anything else to look at? Thanks

Re: Bass VI pickups
I've been eyeing these: http://www.creamery-pickups.co.uk/custo ... tml#jaguar
But the stock ones on the VM VI are okay so I didn't got around to changing them

Re: Bass VI pickups
Cool I'll look into them. So I havnt started to research into this at all really...are Bass VI pickups just three Jaguar pups? The stock pups in the pawnshop bass VI aren't bad but I've found every almost always aftermarket pups are different in pleasing ways, be it by being less hot or more dimensional or more balanced. Does anyone know if the VM Bass Vi neck and middle pup are the same as in the pawnshop Bass VI? I know from working in a music store back in the mid 90s that the stock MIM strat/tele pickps were never as nice sounding as the MIA strat/tele pups. And the squire pups were just terrible in comparison. I assume that's still the case?

Re: Bass VI pickups
VM and MIM VI don't have the same pickups. On the VI, they're basically Squier VM Jaguar pickups. On the Pawnshop, I think they're taken from other Mexican models like the bridge pickup is the same as in the Classic Player IIRC.
Yep, on the original VI, the pickups were Jaguar pups. I have written (prior to Squier reissuing theirs) an extensive and well documented article about the VI's history in French. I should really find it and translate it.
Nowadays though, Squier and MIM pickups are not that terrible, well compared to stock MIA pickups. At least in my experience.

Interesting, are these made by the same guys that made/make lace sensors? I'm really happy with the strats I have with lace sensors, even built a couple guitars using them way back when. I'll have to look into these.Bon Hoga wrote:I'm very happy with Lace Alumitones.

Re: Jaguar/Bass VI pickups
If you can afford the Novak pickups I would say it'd be very hard to beat those, Curtis is an absolute professional. I have a pair of his '64 jag pickups and couldn't be happier.
If you're unsure on the specifics you should shoot him an email to ask what he thinks would suit you because there are a number of options, you can get it wound to any spec and he does lipstick pickups that fit on a jag or VI too. You get a lot more customization options than buying off the shelf pickups which makes the price worth it IMO.

I want to to put goldfoils on my Bass VI, since a lot of them have an acoustic sound with lots of low end.

Re: Jaguar/Bass VI pickups
I've not tried them, yet - but long-term members who've run the gamut on OSG have been raving up the new(ish) AVRI 65 jag and jazzmaster pups. Might be worth checking out? Also... Don't forget Peter, the Pickup Wiz. EXTREMELY underrated pup builder. He's got a full VI set on his site... Not to mention, your dollar is killing it right now. With exchange, you could probably pick up a full set for a song!

Re: Jaguar/Bass VI pickups
yeah I've got a set of his wide range humbuckers in my lee Ronaldo jazzy, that's why he was the first place I looked starting down this road. Thanks for the ideasbackwardsvoyager wrote:Curtis is an absolute professional.
That's a great idea, I've got a couple old guitars with goldfoils I could pull from to try out. I like to build fully loaded pickguards that I can just swap between with my strats...I might do the same hereInconuucl wrote:I want to to put goldfoils on my Bass VI, since a lot of them have an acoustic sound with lots of low end.
I've got a avri 65 jag that I love the sound of, and a avri jazzy too that sounds beautiful with the stock pups. I'll check out the pickup wiz, that's new to me, thanksDADGBD wrote: AVRI 65 jag and jazzmaster pups.)
