It would be convenient to have the "view unanswered/unread/new posts/active topics" in the header so they can be accessed all the time.

They are there when I'm on the board index but not once I go to a topic or thread. I'm using Firefox. I think I use a different board style than most people. I use the ILF Green.
Not sure really how other board styles are laid out, but Green has what you want. Try using that one and see if that helps.
