i've been getting into cult of luna, but i have no idea what to classify them as.
i think someone called them post-metal at one point, and all i could think of was how pretentious and douchey that sounds.
but anyway, this song fucking rocks. for the lazy - shit gets real around the 3:30 mark

(not even the whole song, i can't find a decent version anywhere. just pick up eternal kingdom)

Yeah... :|
People need to stop applying "Post" to shit it can't logically be applied to. I think it actually makes sense for things like Post-Punk, or even Post-Hardcore, but someone's got to give me a concrete explanation for dumb terms like Post-Rock/Metal before I'm going to not think those terms are stupid.
Calling something POST-ROCK/METAL sounds unbelievably up its own ass (which is not meant as an insult to fans, much less musicians, but to the music press that named it... unless it was actually some pretentious Indie douche in a band that called their music "Post-Rock"... in that case, fuck that guy!). To reiterate, my complaint has absolutely nothing to do with the music or participants, or even any kind of "aesthetic" that might be common to PR/M, just the totally bullshit name. I know plenty of fans of this kind of music who would agree!
Anyway, sorry I have nothing worthwhile to contribute here...

Post-metal is probably the easiest way to describe them. Douchey term or not.

Haha, "Post-Grunge" actually made sense in the late 90's when talking about mostly-crappy music made after Grunge was "out" and a bunch of bands were still trying to capitalize on it, albeit with a more radio-friendly sound (Bush).
I think some of the worst "Alternative" music of all time came out then.

To be fair, "Darkwave" (and Post-Grunge, for that matter, which is applicable the same way Post-Punk is*) is a pretty old one, but, yeah, that and "Cold Wave" are both dumb descriptors as far as I'm concerned.
*Which isn't to say "Post-Punk is just the tamed and radio-friendly version of Punk" since it's really just a blanket terms for shitloads of music (and since Punk was turned into a commodity the minute it came into the public eye)... I just hate almost everything the music press would've labeled "Post-Grunge" in the 90's...

Post-metal can not exist though. Metal is a ever evolving and encompassing form. It has dozens of subgenres but all are metal, it doesn't matter. And to be realistic if it was to be actually post metal it would have to be more extreme then the most extreme death/doom/black ect metal that is already here, and yet as you can see post metal is listed as a form of metal so again..... silly.
For the fun of it.
Some metal subgenres:
Primary heavy metal subgenres
Black metal
Death metal
Doom metal
Drone metal
Folk metal
Glam metal
Gothic metal
Groove metal
Industrial metal
Metalcore
Neo-classical metal
Post-metal
Power metal
Sludge metal
Speed metal
Stoner metal
Thrash metal
Cross-genre terms within heavy metal
Alternative metal
Avant-garde metal
Christian metal
Crust punk
Extreme metal
Funk metal
Grindcore
Nu metal
Progressive metal
Rap metal
Symphonic metal
Traditional heavy metal
Viking metal

Er, so what about post-rock then, does that exist?
To me they're just genre names to create an idea in your mind of a band's sound, not a scientific filing system.

To me, post-metal means "the sort of music that Cult Of Luna makes". Like I said, I think of it more of a concept than a written in stone definition.

Existence is futile.
I find all post-bah bah terms silly. So if you wanted to just play rock then since post rock exists you would have to call it post-post-rock

There is nothing to link Cult of Luna to metal though.
There's no lineage there. Simply being heavy or shouting doesn't make you a metal band, there are aethestics, history, influence, themes and imagery involved.
most of the established bands that get tagged as post-metal came out of the hardcore scene (Neurosis, ISIS etc) and the newer ones seem to just be following their lead. then there's all the crossover with sludge bands...
maybe post-metal does fit, in that its a sort of osmotic influence, a genre removed.
but often genre names are never very accurate or though out.... grunge anyone?
