As a 16/17 year old without much money, I need to make a decision. There is currently a harmonica mic 50% off on Musician's Friend. The purchase of it would be used for vocals both live and for recording instruments/singing on a lo-fi album. The purchase of it now would also leave me enough cash to purchase a Shure SM57 or SM58 for more "clean stuff". Would it be a good decision for dirty guitar and vocal tones/grittiness ALA Tom Waits and Isaac Brock? (I know I should just purchase a bull horn, but I figured I could experiment)

I've heard guy sing though green bullets through guitar amps and it sounds like a old intercom, cool sound. I've never heard anyone mic a amp with one though, it's always the other way round. But you never know, might be kind'a cool...

I can still run it straight into a Tascam portastudio, right?

Is the mic phantom or not? Will your Tascam do either? If so it should.

That's what I'd be using (sorry for the trouble).

Check out gls audio if you're thinking about getting an sm-57/58. They make clones for cheap.

Stupid simple answer: If you can plug a guitar straight in to your recorder you can plug that in mic into it as well, they are made to go straight into guitar amps.

I have an Apex harmonica mic... the freq range is wider than the Shure Green Bullet and the rear of it is vented, which is good for reducing feedback. I use it mostly for harmonica but have used it for vox in the past as well... since you're using it for a lo-fi thang, it'll do you well. It's significantly cheaper than the Shure... it lacks an onboard volume control though but who cares?

Try it out! Hell, I've been thinking about selling mine so if you like it and can't afford it new, lemme know.
