so i stumbled upon this today. was pretty blown away....a hardware granular synthesis unit.....thought grain stuff only existed on softwares and vsts.
looks waaay badass, and obviously pricey....(built to order 1400 euros, which is like 2 grand USD
wanted to share and discuss with you all in case anyone else is interested in this kind of stuff......granular processes really interest me for some reason.

granular synthesis is pretty amazing... some more nice info courtesy of wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granular_synthesissounds ok. i wish the soundclips were a little more in depth, though - they seem to only be scratching the surface.

cool! i spent like 2 hours today at work reading up on granular synthesis....was reading some like "papers" i guess(for lack of somethin better to call them) MIT professors and shit wrote about it. pretty intriguing, some went right over my head tho.
as for the clips i didnt listen to them as i was at work...i generally dont put too much faith into clips and often dont listen to them cause they sometimes suck and don't give the unit justice...it also just gives u a preconcieved notion of what your expecting to hear from it later on...i like gettin a new piece of gear with fresh ears and without any expectations of how it will sound. (not that ill be gettin this particular unit, but just generally speaking)
having said that...they prolly only scratched the surface, as it seems this thing is capable of a helluva lot...prob endless sonic capacity...i mean its a grain edit, realtime sound manipulator/mangler, stereo delay, filter bank, with a polyphonic synth section all wrapped into one.
here is one of hte papers:

Quoted from the above article: "The Malstrom synthesizer in Propellerhead's Reason virtual music studio employs a technique known as Graintable synthesis. It is a blending of granular synthesis and wavetable synthesis."
I have Reason and I love using the Malstrom. The only downside is that you can't load your own grain tables. Other than that it's a great piece of software. All the parameters can be automated and the audio coming in and out of the Malstrom can be routed in various ways for lots of sonic flexibility.
If I had the cash I would use hardware over software any day but there is some good software out there (and cheaper)!
The Deformer looks like a sweet piece of hardware, just a little pricey!

oh werd i never knew that about the malstrom!
haha yea this thing (the deformer) is very pricey...but shit i dont think there is another piece of hardware out there like it.

Yeah, the Deformer definitely looks unique and its cool to see somebody making something like that!

Edit: in case of confusion, I'm talking 'bout the FX deFormer, not the Little deFormer.
Well, Delta won't answer my PM, gotharman ignored my question on muff wigglers ALL DAY. I have no choice but to necro this thread and see if anyone wants to talk about the FX deFormer. it is giving me huge GAS but only because i think it will do what I want it to, and by that I mean replace my Superego and just maybe my Xerograph AND maybe have cool distortions AND finally do a bunch of other cool stuff. The chorus on the demo sounds amazing, I don't think I've ever said that before ever. Clearly it can mangle and fuck up my world, but I'd like to get some barely mangled sounds out of it too.
There's probably zero owners out there, and it costs a grip. And probably isn't as cool as it is in my mind. right?

Try perfect circuit...he seems to deal with them and they are pretty nice. If they don't have answers I could talk my wife into going over there[perfect. Circuit] and trying it out maybe.[don't know when...maybe I can sneak out on a weekday. Let me know, man

Yeah it's crazy money and I'd have to bet the farm on it. It would have to be a grand slam to justify it. Would need at least one distortion I like, a great filter, and a great and easy to use freeze effect. Then it would actually be a reasonable purchase for me, maybe even a good deal with all the rest it can do. My guess is that the filter might be the weak link.

I'm in no rush and please don't make a special trip. If you ever find yourself in there for other reasons, you could demo it and report back that would be super sweet. Special attention to the distortions, filter, and "Abstruct0" effect (try to tune it for a Freeze type effect).

Will do, bud. I'm interested myself...I am kind of interested the expansion setup of it which I think is kind of neat (maybe if my tile ever comes in I will drop by,,,they are on the same side of LA...17miles/50 minutes from me in traffic).
It only costs two and a half seppukus...haha
Or a Pigdog and a half...
Or half a Sunn 1200...man, putting things in those terms sucks.

PMs answered.
Gotharman makes the real deal stuff and this has to be a badass box.
As far as the filter goes, Gotharman usually makes synth focused stuff so the filters are usually above and beyond pedals on synths (except a few notable ones which are mostly based on circuits from synths).
