Let's talk about The Cleanness.

I've got this Cleanness in the mail: Image

Because of this, now seems like as good a time as any to start talking about the Cleanness! What do you guys use yours for? I'm going to start out just using mine as a basic clean boost, but with all those knobs on there, I feel like that won't last very long. Also, feel free to post pics of the awesome graphics you have on yours!

I love the Cleanness! highly underrated pedal IMO. I won mine through the t-shirt contest and it's been a great asset to my board. I definitely do the mild clean boost thing like you suggested, but it's also a really nice very low gain drive on the right settings...sort of covers the super transparent low gain my OCD can't quite get. Don't get me wrong, the OCD is mighty transparent, but the Cleanness really just sounds like a louder maybe slightly more driven tone from my clean...zero coloring on the right setting.

That's only half the fun though, I like to mess around with the different bandwidths and maybe give my sound a really lofi AM radio type thing with the bass dialed all the way back and the mids and treble boosted. I could of course EQ my amp that way, but this way I can switch it off! It also can do fun things with my dirt pedals since I have the Cleanness running after all my dirt. With my fuzzes I can dial in settings on the Cleanness to completely change the character of the fuzzes' tones, almost like giving me 2 pedals in one!

all in all, a great pedal. it's a subtle effect, but very useful.
this is the finish on mine:

That finish is awesome! Sounds like some great ideas in there. I love the idea of getting lofi radio type of sounds out of this, and it really would be fun to throw this after my Cream Puff, original Fender Blender, or original Swollen Pickle, just to change the character. I guess the name is somewhat misleading. I have to stop thinking of it as a clean boost, and start thinking of it as an EQ pedal with some gain added to it haha.

Now if it does transparent, low OD as well as you say it does, I wonder if it could replace my Timmy? If I replace my Boss DM-2 with a Sunny Day Delay too, I could end up with a board that is almost all Dr. Scientist haha.

If you do, I'll take that DM-2... Mine needs a brother :D

I like to use the Cleanness as a third amp channel... I set my 2 channel Rectifier up so that the clean channel is completely clean and I set up the distortion channel to be completely distorted, max gain. Then I set the Cleanness with the master volume low so that when I'm on the distortion channel I can kick the Cleanness on and have half or a quarter of the gain, like a middle gain amp channel.

I also like to use it to make bridge pickups sound like neck pickups and vice versa.

The way I probably use it the most is to change the sound of my distortion channel.. I always leave the distortion channel dimed and then I use the Cleanness to say make a really bassy fuzz tone by diming the bass knob and lowering the mids and treble. I also like to use the Cleanness to take away nearly all the bass and treble, I dime the mids on the pedal and get a perfect Slayer tone.. all midrangey and palm mutey... every time I test a Cleanness I set up a Slayer tone and play my favourite riffs.

And for those of you with single channel amps, you can set your amp dirty and use the cleanness to switch to a clean tone at the same volume.

I wouldn't replace your Timmy with it. I still swear by my OCD...the Cleanness just adds a different flavor. You'll see, er, hear :thumb:

Haha well, it's a distinct possibility. I'll let you know if I decide to go that route.

Interesting. That's pretty much the exact opposite of how I would have thought to use it. Makes me wish I had a high gain amp to try this out with. That sounds really cool!

Same volume? Wouldn't it have to cut the volume in order to clean things up?

In my experience, no and if you have an ultra high gain metal shredder 80s amp, you probably would need to cut the volume down though the compression from the tubes should keep it close.

Hmm. Interesting. I'll have to try this next time I'm at practice. Thanks!

Haha, we're such good Slayer buddies, hey!

That's totally one of my favourite things to do with the Cleanness... cop other people's guitar tones! With a solid distortion foundation and a Cleanness I can dial in lots of my favourite kinds of distortion/fuzz sounds and I just think that's fun as heck. Anybody familiar with the band Deadsy? I love dialing in a tone like his, all bassy and fuzzy and grinding.
