MXR Blowtorch...on guitar...

I share a practice spot with a lot of gear heads so we are always swapping each others pedals. One of the guy's bandmates bought him a MXR blowtorch as a xmas present for his bass. He's more into distortion and drive than fuzz on bass....welllll I'm more into fuzz so I threw it on my board and HOLY SHIT.

Here's the guy if you need a visual reference.

All I can say is it out muffs any of my muffs. I'm almost ashamed to say this because I'm a long time muff lover (my favorites being the Russian Green and the Bass Big Muff, which is currently on my board).

It takes a 18v power supply, and I crank the volume on all my fuzzes so maybe that's why it just feels like it has more girth to it but, anyway, it is just an amazing pedal. The fact that it has a mid-shift, a midrange eq and a treble eq is probably why it rules so much. I find, since it is designed to effect the bass guitar frequencies and my tone is very mid heavy (Jazzmaster > JCM 800 2203 > Oversized Marshall 4x12), I can dial in so many usable tones with the mid and treble knobs. And, unlike most of the big muffs, the extremes of both the treble eq and the bass eq are still usable without getting too ear piercingly high and tinny or dark and muddy.

The blend knob is also awesome. With the blend all the way down and the gain all the way up it's a great and surprisingly transparent boost. The blend all the way down takes out all of the fuzz. Further, the little "blowtorch" button on the side adds an extra bit of gain and compression to make things extra squishy and texture-y. With the blowtorch button on, past the 12th fret on the high e and b strings you can get a smooth hint of upper octave and doing bends makes it do that crazy low pitch shift overtone you get with an octave fuzz only WAY WAY louder and bassy-er. If I had a camera, I'd do a video demo. Alas, maybe I'll have one of my band mates bring one to the practice studio.

very singular fuzz with maximum tweakability. this thing can hit you in places you never knew you had. cuts like a fresh blade.

have fun, yon six stringa.

The MXR bass d.i.+ is also an excellent pedal. Very versatile. MXR does make some very nice pedals.

Yeah, I've been messing with it more today. While I won't quite go as far to say that it will overtake my Bass Big Muff on my board (or my Russian Muff, when I haul it out), I was able to dial in some unique, thrashier tones to compliment the smoother muff tones. Also, it interacts great with other pedals, it doesn't color them at all, just gives a gain boost if you run it in front. For leads especially, it has such a killer bite to it. It's very hi-fi and clear, and normally, I don't really get into that, I like a bit messier fuzzes, but this is really doing it for me.

that little blue "bass octave deluxe" is bad arse for guitar as well. terrific octave box that sounds awesome with fuzz...throw in a little trig filter and it's funky as all get up....just huge. fun fun fun...

He uses a moog taurus as well so that undoes the damage! :thumb:
