What did you know before you started?

Yeah so basically
I'm probably gonna buy a beavisboard or some equatable series of pieces and things
I know BASICALLY nothing about electronics... I can read a schematic, and I know how to read resistors, but apart from that I don't know a whole lot. So basically, I'm looking into taking some electronics courses, but I can't do that until next year at the earliest, because my current scholarship won't let me take classes outside my major. I have some questions for anybody who's sort of established themselves in DIY; that is, feel comfortable building a pedal, know what things they can tweak and not cause all of the components to be destroyed immediately.

What kind of stuff did you know about electronics before you started DIYing?
What stuff do you know now?
How did you learn these things?

I knew what carbon comp resistors looked like and that black meant ground because my Mom's family is all electronics wizards.

That's about it.
