What would it be?
I know many use the SM57 but I also notice that many people aren't really happy with it.

Not a difficult choice for me.
If I wanted one to cover every thing including occasional vocals then it would have to be the Sennheiser e 914

I've always just used the line out......

But I've never even owned a "proper" mic... when I have mic'ed up my amps, I just used an old Philips karaoke mic or a (nicer-ish) First Act mic...

I'm so not the right person to ask, but my bandmate (who is a serious gearhead) always got fantastic results from a Shure Beta 57. We'd experiment with different (and fancier) mics, and always came back to that one.

57s are where it's at, cheap, great and dependable.

a 58 actually, I prefer the 58 over the 57 for everything except micing drums

I've been wondering about the Sennheiser e906... I tried to buy one but it ended up being a big fiasco and I haven't come across one for a decent price since. It's a flat mic that was appareantly designed especially for guitar amps. It has a three position switchable filter and can be simply hung from on top of the amp - if a little rattling doesn't bother you, that is.

Contact Mic taped directly to the speaker cone.

For "one mic" I'd chose an Audio Technica AE2500. Technically it's two mics in one housing - a condenser and a dynamic in perfect phase alignment. Each mic on it's own sounds reasonable, but the two together sound amasing!!

I have always wanted to try putting contact mic(s) all over an amp, but I never did because I'm lazy.... I remember reading about someone doing that for a noise setup and thinking it was a great idea.
