pliz. can we have an open, honest, & enlightened discussion about digital dirt amongst people who actually USE digital dirt. & can the digital dirt haters pliz remain silent.

i think it is about the only place where this discussion can occur. but i have my fingers crossed...

While I mostly use my analog pedals for dirt, I do occasionally switch out - for example, the Line6 simulation of a B:assmaster doesn't really sound much like a B:assmaster to me (cuz I've got one), but there is one song that I use it on because its digital boxiness is more appropriate given the context. There's also a few songs that I play where I use my Line6's overdrive dirt and then augment it with another pedal.

Also, I know I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again, but the Red Panda Bitcrusher is the TITZ! And there are a few settings in there that could be considered "dirt." And while I haven't played it, there are plenty of folks out there who love the Geiger Counter. Again, 100% digital.

I think that the only problem with digital dirt is that far too often, people use it as a simulation / replacement for more expensive analog pedals, and therefore it falls flat in comparison. But if you use it for what it is, and can play around with it to find where it works, it's a perfectly valid tool.

If we're talking about bitcrushed digitized distortion with artifacts and shit, then

If we're talking about digital models of amps and other pedals, then to me they are mostly 'meh'

The one exception is the Boss FDR-1, which I have extolled the virtues of here already. It really does sound a LOT like a Deluxe Reverb. I loved it.

Yeah, I'd say that digital dirt often falls short of the real tone they're trying to emulate. The good part is that you're left with something very different. Sometimes those tones are usable to my ears. Often, they're not.
I'm of the philosophy nowadays that I can make my guitar sound decent through just about anything I plug it into.
With digital dirt, ya get what ya pay for.

it is expensive but totally worth it...its a monster, ive gotten endless amounts of soundsout of mine. wavetables, child pleassssse. its like a lil 8 bit computer you can run shit thru and destroy. makes cool lil blips when u turn the knobs. also works nice as a sweet preamp/boost, gets very LOUD.

agreed. ill prolly never get away from analog and pedals, but i would say that you can make nice and decent sounds out of almost anything.

that is kind of my point. trying to get a weird-ass shit from digital dirt. i find some digital dirt to be so bad that it good. & end being more like weird modulation.

What I use for tracking demos for kids is the Digitech Distortion factory.
It's like a producers swiss army knife. (lots of emulations of dist pedals - with amp sims)
Although the sounds recorded usually get replaced by overdubs using real stuff, I do think that it weeees all over the Line 6 sound though.

Objectively, ok, it sounds like shit.
BUT
as anybody who's recorded quick demos for poor kids knows, you can't afford to have any rules or gear philosphies. You do things fast and do whatever works. I've used zoom 505s on voices and drums. Kids arrive with korg pandoras that do crazy things to keyboards and drum machines. All these teenagers seem to have zoom 505s.... weird!

I'm not at all fussy when it comes to mixing either/ Although you can't beat the sound of my reel to reel tape saturating on guitars, there is also a place for izotope's trash and even a (pirated) guitar rig.


P.S. I'm dreaming of a red panda though....

yeah i mean this isn't for Jimi Hendrix wank-job solos or whatever someone might need "analog" distortion for. i want to use Digital Dirt for noise & experimentation. i am seriously considering getting all three of teh EHX Metal Muffs. solely for this purpose.
