I jailbroke my ipod - anyone else do the same?

i got bored today... so i jailbroke my ipod...

i was debating it for quite some time, i knew about jailbreaking before i got my ipod but i decided... ill play it safe until i get bored with it. which i guess really i wasnt bored with my ipod, i was bored with today.

so i took the leap and got some info and did it.

first time around didnt go so smoothly, i had to do a recovery thing so my ipod was like brand new ( no files, music, apps.. the like)... i tried it again.. and BAM - worked like a charm.

for me personally i used blackra1n ( i think thats how its "spelled") then i opted to get cydia through that. i downloaded winterboard i believe its called... a few themes a long with that (very cool) ... got fontswap or whatever.. pretty fun stuff!

also got a reallllly sweet twitter/ facebook status thing and another app or 2.

anyways - im curious if anyone else uses cydia and if so - what are some other cool things i can do? i dont personally know anyone who has done this so ive never seen any of this stuff in person...

yep. that was kind of long and pointless for the majority (im guessing) but i felt like sharing. hah.

also - if anyone has a jailbroken ipod - any idea if i can change the font color? im using a wii theme and its hard to read the letters... just curious

hahahahaha.

there's a cool, free, open-source alternative to most ipods/mp3 player firmware... it's called RockBox and it's unlocks a lot of options on your device that you never knew were available. i don't know if it works on the Ipod and Iphone touch models, but it's worth checking out.

hey!

so basically you get an ipod and basically as is - you can only put on it what apple approves of (aside from the media) - this leaves you with ... well basically no customizing options aside from the locked screen.

so jail breaking kind of opens up more options, give you links to 3rd party applications - etc - which lets you do things like.. change the slider to unlock, change the text at the top of the ipod, the font style, color... docks... lots of different pre made themes. you can use like.. game emulators.. a lot of random stuff that just opens up your ipod to do more ( also works with iphone, im sure its even more popular with iphones)

but yeah. lots of cool little things. i have been doing all kinds of stuff i never thought id be able to do on an ipod. im still a n00b with it but i did all the essential stuff i wanted to do. got a few new swiping functions (slide down and a twitter app pops open , slide the top bar and an options type thing opens)

that rockbox thing sounds cool but it wont work on the touch - although i wouldnt hesitate to try it if i had something itd work with.

woo!

it makes sense that youd be leery to actually do it but to be completely honest it wasnt hard, it didnt take long...

basically just look for " blackra1n" and download it for whatever OS you have ( mac/windows) ... plug your ipod in. close out itunes if it opens - then click blackra1n and a button will say "make it rain" then you click that... andddd then itll install an app on your ipod called blackra1n .. itll reboot and once it does you open up the app, download cydia (which is like an app browser)

and... from there you can download winterboard, fontswap, etc etc and get different themes etc. they have game emulators and all kinds of stuff. i mostly just wanted to put a wall paper behind my icons but there is a lot more you can do if you wanted.

and you can delete it if you want ... so its not really a huge deal, if it doesnt work you just.. reformat the ipod and its all good.

I've been the same with my iPhone; see what I can do without jailbreaking it first.

I tried jailbreaking it twice earlier in the week but it failed both times and I had to restore it.
Not sure why, it could possibly be because of Vista and running blackrain as an XP service or whatever maybe didn't work correctly.

hey guys.

rockbox doesnt work with touches yet, so thats the only problem with that - otherwise i would be down to try.

and also! chris - if you are using black rain just download the windows version - after you plug your phone in and close out itunes, make sure you right click the blackra1n icon and choose run as admin. i believe that can be one of the issues.

if you have already done that then your firmware is probably the wrong one for what youre using, some of them work best with a specific 1 or 2.. etc.

but if you havent tried it. give it a go one more time right clicking and run as admin. just a suggestion.

Yea I did that; I was following a tute. Definitely the correct firmware too.
The only thing I can see you mentioned that I didn't do was to close iTunes. The tute made no mention of having to do that, so I'll try again tonight.
Cheers!

try it out and let me know how it works.

should go
plug in ipod/iphone
close itunes
run your jailbreaker
itll reboot your ipod
itunes will open back up (this is ok)

and... it should work from there.

small step but it could make all the difference!

let me know how it goes! btw are you using blackra1n as well?
