Artifact 2 - a new old song

For some reason, I'm going crazy on the recording these days. Maybe it's because I'm trying to avoid working. I prefer to think that it's because ILF is so inspiring!

Anyhow, this is an old song that I always liked (one of the few with vocals recorded, and the lyrics literally came to me in one fell swoop - that never happens for me), but the old recording sucked. So it's been kicking around for a while, but I never had the gumption to fix it up until now. The funny thing is that since the words were written way before I'd ever found DE (or any of the rest of the lovely builders here), I'm using the term "artifact" in the chorus as, y'know, an archaeological artifact.

When I get a decent preamp setup, I'll rerecord the vocals - as it is, they sound like I had a head cold when I recorded them. And for some reason I wasn't enunciating the word "artifact" clearly enough, so it almost sounds like I'm saying "autograph." D'oh.

In terms of gear, everything was run through a neutral setting on my Bass Pod. The fuzz guitar is my Bronco tenor guitar through my Hype (I had to use at least ONE artifact in rerecording the song, of course!). The feedback at the beginning and phased fuzz at the end were from the original recording, and were from my old 8-string bass through an old phaser + fuzz setup that I don't have anymore ( ). The 8-bit synth sounds were through my Red Panda, but bitcrushed further in GarageBand for extra crushiness (except for the rambling bit at the very end - that's the Hype, doubled with a computer-crushed version of itself). Um... the big fat octaved bass at the end is through my POG (all the bass is my Jazz bass, EQ'd in different ways). The drums are another thing that needs to be redone - just some GB loops, but they do the trick for now.

So, yeah. There ya go. And there it is...

Since you're gonna re-record the vocal, I think you should go for a total Lou Reed/Velvet Underground sound; you could nail that. :joy:

Really like the big fuzz party starting around 2:30. reminds me of Eno's Here Come the Warm Jets, in a good way. :omg:

Aw, thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I think a lot of my vox are going to be leaning in a Lou Reed direction... mainly because he's the king of talk-sing, and am certainly not the best at "SINGING" singing!

And any comparison to Eno is awesome! Thanks! I can't say that I'm anywhere as disciplined as he is at embracing chance & improvisation into my stuff, but I'm a big fan of stumbling on happy accidents and not trying to perfect/fix an idea to death...

Do agree with the Lou Reed analogy.

Keep it up.
