What are you folks using?

I have a budget of about $900-$1000 and I need something that can keep up with a Fender Twin Reverb and an extremely loud drummer. I really don't want an SVT + 8x10 deal (though I'm open to Ampeg stuffs). What's out there (new or used)?

I’m using a ’69-70 B-15 for recording and small gigs.
Ampeg V4-B and have a number of different cabs, 2x15, 2x12 & 4x12

There are a couple of V4-Bs & V4s on the bay.

Oh the V-4 is exactly the same amp as the V-4B, it just has reverb (the reverb board is in the V-4B).

Oh the VT-22 V4 in 2x12 cab just add a bass cab.

Ok I’m an Ampeg person.
I’d keep checking the bay and Craig’s list until I found what I liked.

This thread really kind'a called to home that I don't pay any attention to any of the new stuff out there for bass amps in less it is big and tube like a SVT, 400+, Orange [Oh how I want a Orange] :idk:

I remember liking SWR before fEnder bought them be I haven't play through one in a long time, like MM I always think Ampeg is a good option. I like trace stuff. I hate Eden and GK.

Me personally I have: Mesa Boogie 400+, Ampeg SVT CL, Sunn ((O))) 200s, Musicman HD 130 and a Fender Bassman 20, you will notice these are all tube amps.....

Another way to go is is a pre-amp > power amp setup. Find a pre-amp you like the sound of and run it through the power amp of your choice, I did this for a while. For Pre's I like Alembic [F-1X] and Demeter, and the old H&K Tubeman.

Just an amp? Or an amp & a cab?

I like my old SVT 3-pro, but it's old, and someone who knew amps told me that it's from when Ampeg was "still good." Take that for what it's worth, since I'm not sure about Ampeg's company history.

That said, I've been awfully tempted by the Markbass amps I've been seeing around. Tiny, light and LOUD AS F*CK. I have a friend who plays out with one quite a bit, and swears by it. It's small & light enough to carry in a laptop bag. I believe those can go for as low as $600 - they also have a tube hybrid version that I've seen for $800.

I've played through Hartkes before, and they are plenty loud & punchy. One of my cabs is a frankensteined 2x10 with Hartke speakers... when I stack that on top of my GK 4x10, I've got enough muscle for any gig...

It seems that I'm the poorhouse, food-stamps, bassist around here, as I'm the only one not rocking a 4-digit-costing bass amp. My head is a Peavey Mark VI from the 80's, which I love because it can go down to 2 ohms, puts out 400 watts, and has a 10-band graphic eq plus hi and low shelving filters, an FX loop, a crossover, chorus and compression. For cabs I'm running a GK 2x10 and a Hartke 1x15 (which I blew out and replaced with a Peavey Black Widow 15 incher)

eh. I'vew been keeping quiet. Crate 160 combo (50$ used, 160 ss watts to a 15") and a Peavey 112 that i way over paid for ($350 new, ??watts into a 12").

neither is in totally good working order, but i really prefer combos to head+speaker cab. the new fender bassman tv combos are pretty slick looking, but i don't know if they'll keep up with the twin, which is a fucking loud amp.

Thanks for the responses folks. What do you guys think about 2x12 cabs for bass?

I'm seriously considering an Avatar 2x12 cab.

I like 2x12 cabs. They are loud, mellow and you don’t need roadies to move them.
Avatars have been getting good reviews and are decently priced, about ½ what an Aguilar would cost.
The tolex combinations look really good too.
