Yeah, Curve was cool, although they were a little on the electronica-based side of things.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the closest thing I can think of to Elastica nowadays, but I'm not the most versed person on alt-pop-punk

I remember some big to-do where folks were claiming that Justine ripped off Wire for that first Elastica album. So maybe Wire would be a good place to start! I don't know if this is heretical, but I really like their newest album "Object 47" quite a bit...

Yeah, that pretty much dogged them their entire career. I think Wire actually sued them at one point. May as well go straight to the source if you're wanting more of that kind of thing...

My memories of the period of Elastica's heyday (mid-90's Britpop) were more Oasis/Blur though.

I've been listening to Ash quite a bit of late (Their current A-Z series of singles and tour has kicked this off), and Their former guitarist Charlotte Hatherley was compared to Justine quite a bit when she first joined Ash in 1997. Her solo stuff's not bad, actually. Her first solo album, "Grey Will Fade" might be a good place to look. Charlotte's solo stuff is probably more on the poppier end of the spectrum though. Much like Ash, actually.

Makes me think of Dance Hall Crashers (great live band back then). They had a ska-tinge to their sound, but they rocked!

Who have they nicked tunes from?
The two most major thefts were fromn the Stranglers and Wire. Elastica settled out of court over the similarities between "Connection" and Wire's "Three Girl Rhumba", and between "Waking Up" and the Stranglers' "No More Heroes". However, there are lots of other riffs and tunes which appear to be lifted stright from some new wave classics. In addition to the two obvious ones above fans have suggested:

* "Line Up" / Wire's "I am the fly" (chorus)
* "Connection" / The Cars "Let's Go" (handclaps)
* "2:1" / Wire's "Being Sucked in Again" (guitar)
* "See that animal" / Bachmann Turner Overdrive's "Taking Care of Business" (guitar)
* "Vaseline" / Blondie's "Sunday Girl"

Speaking of Hole, has anyone listened to Melissa Auf der Maur's solo album? Though it was released in 2004 it has an extremely 90's feel to it. I'm a fan.

i was actually going to go see her a couple of times but didn't for some reason: first time i didn't like the venue she was playing at and then the other time it was a free show in the park or something but i don't do those either unless it is like George Clinton or some shit.

anyway. not a fan per see but i would go see her play.

& then the one dude that was in Hole, he is in this band w/ Vincent Gallo, i forget the name, i skipped out on that too. i probably would have been more into that though...

I can only suspect that people who make a big deal about this kinda thing are people who've never spent any kind of quality time creating or exploring music, because if they did, they'd know borrowing and manipulating has been part of the game since the dawn of time.


Im sorry but no one has to point to any article to show the difference between "borrowing" and "stealing". I, personally been wrtting music for more than 20 years.

There is a fine line between been inspired by someone else´s work and simply write your name on someone else´s tune (thats why those cases were settled in court and elastica had to give credit were it was due). If you want to know what I mean, just listen to the tunes pointed in the article.

I don mean to be rude or anyone in this forum to agree with me. We all have a love for music but a little truth and some facts should always be wellcome.

I really dig Lush too.

I just recently got into Pale Saints....via downloads. I'm having a hard time finding any of their CDs though....and I have some good record stores around me. Anyway...In Ribbons is awesome.
