n00b q's on components

I'm working on trying to build my first pedal, and in searching mouser.com, I've come across several things that I'm relatively unsure of, and I know you guys can set me straight.
1) I'm guessing that 1/4 watt 5% metal film resistors are what to use?
2) I'm looking for a ?cheap? (and available) alternative to AC128's. I think I read on another forum that BC558B's might work. At this point, I'm not really for or against germanium or silicon, and am more interested in just getting down some basic ideas and concepts (i.e. I just want noise right now, I'll deal more with quality later.)
3) I cannot for the LIFE of me find which sockets to get for trannies. This kinda goes back to #2, in that I could eventually switchout trannies for others and get a feel for them as far as the pedal is concerned. Could someone please help me out and point me in the right direction on Mouser?
Like I said, I'm new, and almost completely in the dark except for the past two or three weeks of lurking forums and scouring teh intarwebz.
