Rare Flea Market Excitement

I have found many cool things at flea markets and junk stores over the years, but not as frequently nowadays, as much of what is out there has been found and put up on Reverb or eBay, etc.

I got rid of all my tube amps a little while back, and have had a slight twinge of regret, wanting something small for home or low volume solo shows, so I have been toying with the idea of making one last tube amp. I have an Akai reel to reel machine that contains two separate single ended EL84 based amps and I was going to take the transformers from one half and put them in a chassis, etc. I would have made something like a Vox AC4 or a Gibson GA5T.

I was off work yesterday and went to the massive Rogers, OH flea market and I am now most of the way there. This probably only really needs filter caps and a 3 prong cord. I am also going to get rid of the covering and figure something else out for that.

Now I still might make one more amp. I have an old hifi chassis that uses two 6V6 tubes and I want to do a mini EH185 style circuit.

If you ever find yourself in western PA or eastern OH, the Rogers flea can be a wild time.

Nice find! I also like going to these things just to see what’s there- that looks next level though.

Yars Revenge! Just seeing that conjures a mental onslaught of 8 bit battle sounds. Love the patina on the Harmony amp, good score.

So, to get the chassis out, you have to pull the baffle. I wanted to clean up the faceplate and see what the inside looked like.

Unfortunately, the baffle was in worse shape than it appeared and it basically disintegrated, LOL.

It's no biggie to make a new one. Luckily, the rest of the cab seems fine. There is some minor deterioration on the bottom, but I'll get some rotted wood stabilizer and it should be ok.

hard to tell if it’s plywood or fiberboard.

It's fiberboard.

The chassis is surprisingly clean overall inside. The control panel cleaned right up.

Nice scores!

Somebody once shipped me an old Danelectro amp with a 15" speaker and a flimsy fiberboard baffle. Was poorly packed.

Speaker totally destroyed that baffle.
