when i was improvising with some other folks this summer, i realized that i needed a 60s-style bumblebee fuzz sound that none of my wide array of fuzz/tortion pedals can do. so i'm looking for a fuzz that sounds like 1965-68, particularly the clipped, compressed quality of the riff on "Satisfaction" and the growl on "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." yeah, i know, the logical answer is "go buy a Maestro clone," but i haven't been poking around the pedal market for a couple of years now and i don't know what's out there. which is where y'all come in: what should i check out? thanks in advance; a demo video would be brilliant.

If you want the texture of blown-out speakers (Stones, Kinks), then the Roger That does that well. It also does radio tuning and more traditional gain stuff (dialing the TUNE pot down). That can be had for around $220-230 used.
I've always been curious about that 2.5volt fuzz build into the Grand Funk guitar. The one Basic Audio made a version of, the messenger.

so far here's what i've got:
the Roger is too random and variable. i want a consistent, cohesive tone that remains constant. (and alliterative!)
Satisfaction Plus is meh.
i've looked at the following clones:
Maestro FZ-1/1A
Jordan Bosstone
Univox/Shin-ei Superfuzz
Sam Ash Fuzz Boxx
Shin-ei FY-2
Selmer Buzz Tone
the Catalinbread silicon and germanium FuzzRites.
the closest thing i've found to the sound in my head so far is the germanium FuzzRite. the others all sound more like super-hyped-up distortion pedals than "fuzz" per se; they don't get into absolute square-wave territory and/or let too much of the guitar sound through. i want a consistent, thick sound with the tone of the guitar obscured as much as possible, so it's only acting as a signal generator.

I don't have anything significant to contribute to your question but I'm glad to hear from you and hope you're doing okay!
Looks like Fredric Effects is still going; their stuff is decent, inexpensive, and readily available on Reverb. That would be my first stop for these circuits.

Basic Audio Zippy is the thickest/most tone obscuring of this type of circuit that I have. The Basic Audio fuzz right is Ge circuit that can also get pretty thick and it’s one of my favorites. It covers way more ground than the zippy IMO.
The silicon fuzzrites I have (Deadbug 1968 and a few DIY type builds) tend to be thinner and a little bit more open to my ears. My 1968 is up on the B/S/T board.

Never played one but this to my ears sounds like the sound you're describing:
Other fuzzes I own (or have owned), that from my experience kind of may achieve this sounds:
BRSI TFZ (now Impossible Colors)
Spiral Electric FX Allora & Black V2
Sounds From the Void Gorgon Fuzz
Stomping Stones The Virus
Modern option (but IMHO too over the top): MASK Audio YES.

Dubs is back! Excellent—the kids ain’t gonna scare themselves these days.
I’d look FuzzRite for this ask. That bass shy angry can of wasps thing. But I might also see if something from Mask Audio Electronics or maybe a Mid Fi fuzz hits a similar space without directly evoking specific historic sounds.

fuzzrite (or orpheum) is the thing, but not the catalinbread IMO. a bit too polite for me, i have a toetags one that i feel is spot on. it behaves very differently with higher output pickups, it works best with single coils in my experience.
but also.... just about any two-transistor fuzz with an external bias will get you there. fuzz face, vox TB. not pertinent if you want a dedicated surfy buzzbox but if one wanted something more versatile, i'd say go for something with that ext. bias

The Peace Gun has always looked awesome but I've never tried anything Mid-fi yet.

I got a Catalinbread Merkin fuzz for exactly that sound and couldn't be happier.

The FZ-1 half of the Reuss Bob Hund pedal is pretty gnarly imo. He doen't make it with this name anymore, it is something anonymous now "double classic fuzz" or similar.

i decided to go for the Cbread germanium Fuzzrite. there were a couple of short non-celebrity demos that convinced me. thanks for your help, everybody!
