I know I'm old and stuff, but I just learned that this was a thing. I liked Crass back in the day, maybe I should have kept my ears open.

Still trying to wrap me head around D-Beat (possibly an offshoot of Crustcore), but I have my hands full already with Crabcore, Cupid Car Club Core, Lustmord & Clown Core (RIP?)

I have never heard anyone use the term 'stenchcore', I'm guessing that's a joke genre derived from the concept of smelly, 'crust' punks. Which I guess is also the origins of 'crustcore', but that one actually stuck as a legitimate genre moniker. Usually it's just referred to as 'crust', though, and it's basically interchangeable with d-beat.

This video is a good intro to d-beat:

Here's one example of a crust band in the more progressive vein:

And another, bit more traditional:

As for the other -core 'genres' mentioned those are all just memes as well. Lustmord is dark ambient, I don't know what the connection is there.

Stenchcore is/was a real thing in the UK, insofar as it was a way that some crust punks of the time would refer to themselves - Deviated Instinct (who are tremendously good) use & used the term:

All that to say you should listen to Deviated Instinct they're very good.

Ooooo thank you all for the learnings. I will listen to it all.

I saw this ad on our local craigslist and that opened up the rabbit hole

Deviated Instinct is fantastic! Welcome To The Orgy and Guttural Breath are still pretty much 10/10. Other great old UK crusties would be some early Hellbastard and Hellkrusher (yes, they are related) but don't know if the term stenchcore was ever used for either of them.

:!!!: Yeah for sure - the reunion/reactivation Deviated Instinct stuff is also really good, and (as of a couple of years ago) they were still rad live as well. Firmly underrated in the broader context of UK punk I reckon.

Agreed. Pretty sure some of them were in Spine Wrench too, that band rules.

sum wikkit stenchbeet rite heah:

Last I heard from some guy on last.fm 10 years ago is that the singer became a nazi speedfreak.

Not really stenchcore/generic 80's-style crust, but way too smelly to just be vanilla D-Beat.

I have no idea what crustcore refers too (since all crust is hardcore? what does core even mean today) but im pretty sure stenchcore is crust that uses less d-beat and is more offshoots of bands like Amebix or GISM, less Swedish may be a good generalisation since we refined the art of ripping of discharge, I think Skaven were among the first of the bands that had people call them stenchcore instead of crust (or it was just the first i heard who cares they rule either way).

I have no clue what good stenchcore bands are out there tho because I am swedish and know that the only dynamics possible on drums is allowing yourself some blastbeat amidst your dedication to the one and only drum beat. So what better to do than hijack this thread with a Finnish EP that could've wiped us of the map
