Pic not completely related.

I'm looking for an electric solid-body, around $300. Recommendations?

That yellow is blinding!

Just go to a music store and play all the cheap basses you can find. Back in the day I played a Fender Squier P-Bass that was pretty good for a budget bass. :idk:

What kind of tone are you going for? Are you going for a dark, wooly tone, or a sharp punchy one? I picked up an ESP Viper 254 this spring for a little over 200. It's a great bass, but it has humbuckers and a really dark heavy tone that not everyone goes for.

I'd like something versatile. :) Taking the previous video examples, if I had to pick one tone it would be the P-Bass.

Fenders definitely have their own sound. I would definitely recommend that you try a couple other brands. A lot of bassists tend to get locked into the mindset that there are only two types of basses, p-basses and j-basses. Then again, there is a lot of fender love on this board so I'll just stop here :)

Not me - as far as I'm concerned, the only two types of basses are J-basses and Rickenbacker 4001s!

But fr real, I've been amazed by the newer Squier offerings... that said, there's plenty of good stuff to go around. Are you near a >shudder< Guitar Center? Go in and play, and pay a lot of attention to the neck - as far as I'm concerned, things like tuners, bridges and pickups can all be upgraded whenever you have the time and cash. But a good neck - that's crucial.

Very good advice from Jrmy.

The neck probably is the most important part.
Feel is very important to me, like he said the hardware and pickups can be changed later, but if the bass doesn’t feel right you won’t be happy playing it.

Try a lot of different ones out, Schecter, Yamaha, Fender, etc and don’t forget to look at the used wall.
Hold out until Nov 27th (The day after Thanksgiving) before buying anything. That’s when GC starts blowing out gear.
Last year American Standard Jazz basses were going for $500 at some of the stores.

I tried an old Gibson Ripper once, it was pretty much the best sounding bass I've ever played. :omg:

How about this: http://www.eastwoodguitars.com/ check out the univox bass down at the bottom. I have a bass that they discontinued and it's very good quality considering what i payed for it.

Hey, it's my birthday! I was kinda busy. :joy: But I did go an play a 5-string Squire Jazz-Bass with 3-band EQ. Dang that thing was BIG. Sounded pretty darn good.

And I played a 5-string Carvin with 3-band EQ, liked the size/weight more than the J-B, but not as impressed with the sound, and the price was over my budget. Will try more out later this week. :bob:
