Yep, not good. R.I.P. I like the sound of a few of his synth designs.

I only had the chance to try out a Prophet-600 years ago. Sadly I didn't like it at all, mainly due to the fact that the parameters are calculated by the slow Z80 micro processor. It has knobs for all the functions, but turning the knobs is no fun at all, because of the parameter steps and the noticeable delay of the potentiometer value scanning. It annoyed me so much that I didn't like to tweak the sounds of the unit that belonged to a friend who was going to sell it. I remember the sound being okay-ish, but not overwhelming. I wished it had been a Prophet-5 instead. I know that I had liked that one to pieces.

Oh, and I had a KORG Wavestation EX for some years (Dave Smith was involved in the development process and the Wavestation was based on the Prophet VS). I ended up selling it again, because of its silly sound patch system ("Performances", my ass! :grumpy: ) and (to my ears) rather mediocre sound.

R.I.P.

i appreciate that he was active and effective well past the standard defined "retirement age"

a creative force that supplied fuel for a horde of creators

he leaves a large footprint, and whatever folks may think of the utility and influence of any one of his designs, i think the net effect of his life in music tech has been to enrich us all, even those who don't/didn't ever use any product that he touched. the only gear of his invention i've ever owned is the Evolver, and it's another one with an interface that might bring sighs, but it sure brings a lot to the table for it's price/size. i do know i enjoyed the hell out of the sounds from the Prophet 5 the keybs player in one of my college band played regularly :D
