okayso, i was just admiring the toanz on my NeXt Distortion X and went in for some gut pics and was reminded that it is yet another 4049-based distortion that i <3

EHX Hot Tubes, Red Llama, one other Way Huge jawn that i can't remember right now (mebbe the Fat Sandwich), the Reezafratzitz, all these have i lurved, the NeXt above all - so, what else is out there - and don't say that Blackstone jawn because all that tgp-ery gets too far up my nose which is oversensitive b/c too many 'rona tests :/

in fact, i'm more interested in these in the mid-to-high-gain range, whether "fuzz" or "distortion" as i'm fix'd fer life for low gain overdrives

i'm way curious about ye aulde ROG 22/7 and Double D, but those seem to be found rather thin on the ground these days

The Great Destroyer uses a 4049 but uses the buffered version of the chip. There was another DIY circuit called the Christine that I seem to recall used that version of the chip, as well, and was another glitch type fuzz. Can't remember why but the buffered version was able to make those circuits go apeshit.

The front end of the Data Corruptor to get the fuzz sound and square wave to feed the PLL utilizes the 4069 which is like the 4049 but with a different chip pinout. I have always wondered how the 22/7 sounded as I only built a couple of muffs that were kinda not so special. Sure there are some others other there that use that chip, think a lot of stuff was was off of the Craig Anderton Tube Sound Fuzz circuit which was based on the red llama. I have a bunch of those chips in my stash but haven't messed with them in years.

The WH Purple Platypus is the Red Llama/Tube Sound Fuzz with a Green Ringer strapped on. Tripps borrowed well.

Yep, that distortion sound plus Green Ringer is a win.

That sounds excellent, think I'm going to have to build one of those. With a green ringer. Chankgeez - for a muff circuit, green ringer on the front end or back end?

You can try it both ways, but sometimes Green Ringer can get a little lost in front of a Muff.

Obviously, it'll sound nastier after.

interesting distinction by LaoWiz between the use of these parts for glitchy purposes as opposed to "amp-like" drive....

found a snaxy fuzz on reverb by a builder (Capitalist Death Cult?) who claims he's harnessed a PT2399 for distortion tones that outdo the 4049/4069 for straight drive tones.

i do enjoy the gained up tones i've heard from the Echo Degrader and from diy Noise Ensemble jawn. never thought of them as particularly "amp-like" or even straight-up as drive tones the way i've heard from 4049/4069 devices....

i do wish CDC dude would make or procure demos for his stuff tho :/

Capitalist Death Cult dude is a nice guy. I picked up a Repeat Percussion clone w/ a built-in Green Ringer from him a while back. (He switched out the stock knobs to purple ones for me.)

i've noticed that sometimes these 4049/4069 devices are referred to as mosfet drives, but that's a slippery moniker

ime, you're more likely to see an SHO-clone or SHO-based circuit, or a toobskreemer-type opamp with diode clippers in the feedback loop with mosfets used as clipping diodes, or a mostortion-type (mosfet opamp with non-mosfet diodes, i think *not* in the feedback loop, so "hard-clipper" style more like an OD250/Dist +/RAT) than you are something based on the 4049/4069

tho maybe those coud float *your* boat

i've also seen some discrete mosfet aiab pedals floating around out there, and even a coupla discrete mosfet fuzzes - i tend to like those more

still bemused by how consistently i like the 4049/4069 - and i also get why not everybody does - they can sound hairy/grainy (which i like) but which can apparently ruffle the saturday golf hair of the tan pantsers out to impress the soccer moms with their smoove mooves

and they're not usually the tightest in the bass dept, so not ideal chug machines

basically, they're a lil bit amp-like, but also always a lil bit fuzzy, which is a nice place to hang out to my ear....

Have to say, some of the demos you are posting have peaked my interest.

Capitalist Death Cult is one (out of many) of the small builders on Reverb who have come across my radar enough that I've put them in my feed but I somehow missed this one you linked to. Wish there was a decent demo of it........
