FX loop weirdness

Something annoying just happened to my fx loop. The pedals in my loop would not pass signal. If I bypassed the pedals, just a cable from "out" to "in" I heard a signal. If I ran a true bypass pedal in the loop it would pass signal, until I turned it on. If I ran the exact same group of pedals and cables into the front of the amp, no problem.
Basically, any pedals that are actually on or buffered bypass killed the signal in the loop.
Remembering the lessons I learned from watching IT Crowd I turned the amp off and then on again. Boom. Back to normal.
Any ideas why this might have happened? This was a minor annoyance today but if it came back at a gig that would suck ass, especially if my janky fix did not work.
The amp is a Peavey VTM 120.
