So I am sure this has been discussed before but I am
LAZY and I couldn't be bothered searching.
I was going to impulse buy a Soul Food today cos I want to try a klone but it turns out they are not as cheap as I expected, so I had second thoughts.
So, what is good? I'm not looking for note perfect klon replica for megabucks I want to spend a moderate amount of money on something that sounds cool and gets across the general character of the circuit in a decent enough way. What's the haps?
So far tempted by: Soul Food, idiotbox thing, ???

I have absolutely Zero experience with klons, but I'd go with the idiotbox without doubts cause he's cool
(and the pedal has a Star Wars reference)

Are you gonna be mostly using it as an overdrive or mostly as a clean boost? Where in the signal chain as well?

I recommend this. Mostly because I just bought it. I assume it is a klone? If not it got me up over the free shipping mark at Amazon so... worth it.

...Yes?
I really like the sound of it as an overdrive from demos I've heard but also I like boosting things so boost will be a key goal. All of the above.

Good. It's always best to experiment with placement, amount of gain, EQ and stuff like that.
That being said, I have my Klon/e placed at the very end of my chain as an almost always on (mostly clean) boost. Really the only time I'd switch it off is if I've got a fuzz on and it's takin' the edge off of the fuzz.
I tried a Soul Food when skully lent me one. It's just OK as an overdrive and not worth it as a clean boost. Doesn't really sound like a Klon. I also tried a Madbean klone he built at the same time (which sounded very close to a Klon).
Haven't tried the IdiotBox. So, can't comment on it.
I recently picked up an Earthbound Audio klone built on an Aion Electronics board. It's not really gettin' along with the guitar/amp set-up I've got here.

The good thing is the diodes are socketed. So, I intend to try out some other diodes.
Don't even ask me about the buffer. (As I've said, it's almost always on. So, I never use the buffer.).
Hope that helps.

On a whim, I picked up one of those cheeeeeeap WISH klons - because fuck it - and I ended up liking it so much I rehoused it. I'm too common to ever come within a few kilometres of a the real thing, but what it does is pretty great.

I had a Tumnus Deluxe for a bit....the EQ was kinda interesting. I think the mids/lows were active and the treble was a passive / roll-off. The buffer was switchable too, and it had a high gain mode if you want a drive instead of a boost.
Sold it cuz I didn’t really dig the Klon sound and generally not crazy about Wampler....it was super well built, good sound, etc just not my thing.
I wanna try the Idiotbox MK one day.

Thanks for the skinny on the Soul Food chanks. I had heard the same thing about it on the internets but you know I don't trust internet klon dudes ('cept you). So yeah... Fredric or build my own madbean one seem like good options.
NVM the madbean site says it's a hard build

I know my limitations.

I've made a bunch of these over the last decade plus. Never really as a production model but for one-off custom stuff. Most are direct circuit replicas unless requested otherwise. Not sure it would fit the moderate price scale, but hey...handbuilt. Here's the most recent one:

Hard disagree. Maybe more difficult to troubleshoot than a TS-808, say, but its not like it needs calibration or part matching or anything.

That one is gorgeous!!
Hmm interesting. I am wicked out of practice though so I'm erring on the side of believing them when they say it's tough (my DIY skills are not great).
