Them Crooked Vultures

Tonight I had the great honor of seeing live in Columbus Ohio the new super-group band Them Crooked Vultures. The band is made up of members Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) on guitars and vocals, Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) on drums, and the legendary John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass. Also at the show was Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age) on guitar.
The band has been extremely secretive about their work and an upcoming CD is expected to be released later this year.
Them Crooked Vultures ripped through about 12 original songs and played for about 80 minutes straight.
I was standing about six people deep on the left-hand side of the stage directly underneath the huge speaker column and about two feet away from the bass column speakers next to the stage.
All I have to say about the concert is ... it was incredible. John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl make up the best rhythm section in the World! Josh Homme's riffs were tasty and nasty, guttural and visceral. The riffs reminded me a lot about QOTSA but the rhythm section took it to the next level. Jone's bass playing has never been better. He played a four string bass, a five string bass, an eight string bass that had LED's, a Roland keytar, and he even played a couple songs on some sort of analog synth that he played the bass line with his feet on multiple pedals and used his hands to play other parts. Hell, he even played slide on one of the basses. Dave Grohl's power behind the kit was unyielding. His long hair was twirling violently in every direction and he wore a big smile on his face for most of the show!
This was a unique concert experience because the music to my ears was virgin. Before attending the show I had only heard a few clips off the net. Most concerts that I attend I am very familiar with the music, but this evening was much different. Needless to say I am very excited to hear the studio versions of these songs.
Thanks for reading and you all should look on YouTube for some bootleg videos and such!
P.S. - my ears hurt and are ringing like a mother!
