So the Delay Time knob on my DD-20 is starting to, I dunno, slip? It's getting increasingly harder to dial in to the millisecond because it doesn't always "take" - sometimes it goes in the wrong direction, sometimes it doesn't do anything, sometimes it gets it right. Holding it down to speed up still works, though that's not very precise.

Any thoughts? Cause, solution?

Just swap it out is probably the best solution

The DD-20 is getting pretty long in the tooth, being almost 20 years old now, so it is likely just a worn down rotary encoder.

I had the same issue. I replaced the decoder and now everything is okay. The decoder is the following part:

Part Code: 03231912 

Part Name: ROTARY ENCODER W/SW

R-Description: ENCODER EVQB1SZ1720B

You can order it from a Roland dealer. It cost me about 20€, though, iirc.

You can try contacting BOSS / Roland's US distributor first probably.

So it turns out that the rotary encoder was cheap to get and cheap to repair. But then I got the pedal back from the shop and it won't power on! That is, the power light goes on, but nothing else. Tried three different wall warts (including one that is currently powering a different DD-20), as well as my isolated supply - nothing. Talked to the guy at the shop, who says he "noticed" when he plugged it in that it didn't react with a standard supply, and when he plugged it into the bench's supply he was able to tweak the current and get it working. He took it back to check out, but didn't seem very optimistic, and said that if he couldn't come up with something "we can talk about store credit or sourcing another for you."

Setting aside my annoyance that he didn't mention this while he was working on it, does anyone have any thoughts on what might have gone wrong? The only thing I can think of is that he accidentally fried something, but I don't know enough to go beyond that...

Get it back from that guy right away and send it to someone who can actually fix it. Damn man, that’s just awful. Bench’s supply? Get it working?? It’s an industry standard supply HE did something during the initial “repair” or when he fed it voltage from whatever thing he was describing. If it was working in any fashion before duder got ahold of it the fault is on him.

Thanks for the backup, gang. I have a good relationship with this shop - they have the best tube amp tech in this half of the state - and so I'm surprised by this. I should hear back from him tomorrow & we'll see what he has to say. I have another DD-20 anyway, so if I can get, say, $200 store credit (what I paid for it on Reverb plus the cost of the "repair"), I might just take that, especially as I'd like to buy an amp from them sometime in the not too distant future.

Current and voltage are related however so it seems to have shifted its preference."

Um, no, the repair guy obviously produced a major fuck up and owes you a DD-20. Seriously, I replaced the encoder on mine a few weeks ago. It's as straight forward a repair as it can get and super easy. No reason to return the pedal with multiple weird issues.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If I'm dissatisfied they'll do me some kind of store credit, or source another. I'm actually hoping the credit they offer is good because they've got a few things I'm interested in.
