Stop being a slave to your gear

;) :p :)*

As someone that has been on gear forums for a very long time, and been playing weird music longer than some of you have been alive I am just going to put this here ;)

Being a slave to technology is now part of our culture and has been for a long time. And this goes with gear as it is technology ;)

But when you start down the road of I need this to inspire me and I need this because my hero has one or if I have this I will be different and unique then you get a bit lost. You always have to remember that all the crap we NEED are just tools and nothing more. The music comes from inside you not your gear. If Snake plissken typed in the wold code

and all electricity went away most of us that really like making sounds would find a way even it would be banging on empty cans.

Sure we get lost in the art vs pop vs consumerism but that has more to do with how growth economy has perverted all the mainstream art forms than people not liking your blackeddroneshoegazenoise album. We live in a time where 2 fucks write MOST pop songs because of the machine and most pop music has sounded exactly the same for 20 years.. And the other side of the coin or artistic purity; like jazz, look how when they wanted it to not be dance music and show off their artistic skills jazz started a decline to where all you have left is guys on forums talking about how it is that most expresive art form but how anything that doesn't sound the same is trash... this is happening to rock now as well... And no. A new listening platform will not make people that think Drake is the most talented singer of ALL time like noise rock. Sadly you need a full culture shift like the 60's again to change things and if it does the kids will HATE auto-tuned pop, mumble rap and noise pedal rock with a vengeance!

I was lucky in that I was in a band that kicked ass musically and had good songs where all the gear flipping I did was around fitting into and enlarging a sound and what didn't work but was weird and noisey I'd use on what ever weird art/music thing I was messing with in my own time  Now that things in life are what they are the side project is now the project... so I have had to actually think up a rig that works for improv and wire sounds because why not? And in doing so my rig in it's way is vastly more simple than my psychedelic rock bass rig  Why? Because as I always end up rediscovering making weird / creative sounds comes from your mind. And the more cool stuff the oscillates and glitches really just gets in my way and makes you feel trapped.

Trapped?
Yes trapped. You get trapped if you have to rely on a particular sound to make a song/sound. Your are trapped if you NEED that gear to write. Where you need more and more and more things piled onto of things to keep you motivated and able to make "interesting" sounds.

The gear is suppose to make it easier to get the idea you have to work but you have to always keep perspective. Now all that said if YOU NEED all the crap after taking a good long look at what you are doing and say "yeah I need this" do you? Yes. Because you know they are just tools, a means to an end.

So what?
Well when you take all this in it doesn't really help when you actually need the right fuzz... or a looper that doesn't get in your way and became a crutch or a hassle :thumb:

Oh yeah? Well if I’m a slave to my gear then how come it lives in my scary spider infested basement (along with A LOT of extra paper towel I accidentally overbought at Costco) and I sleep upstairs in a nice warm comfy bed?

Checkmate, Blackened Soul.....

I have a sneaking suspicion that a rat died down there (or some other weird shit since it’s been kind of funky) and I’ve been leaving the dehumidifier on which as we all know acts as an infrared shield against alternate realities infesting into our timeline. Checkmate again, blackened soul!!

Why are you hiding your playing behind a bunch of gimmicky pedals? Let your fingertips do the magic!
