Gear Dilemma! Delay or Pay.

Did some repairs for a dude and as we have a long standing relationship, this time he's offered me a vintage 16 second digital delay in lieu of payment.
I could
super do with the money, but the 16 second is probably worth two times what I'd be charging (obviously I can't just take it and sell it as that would be a dick move) and this is probably the only chance I'll ever get to own one, unless I won the lottery, I'm not someone that would drop that kind of cash on a pedal.
Thing is, I don't really find my self with time to actually play much any more and doubt I'll be doing much recording/bands or anything after lockdown so it'd really be just a fun toy and general ownership of it... but while my GAS has mostly evaporated these days, this was always one of 'the' ones.
I've been trying to tell my self it would be a good "investment" even if it doesn't get as much use as it should and given its status, not using it too much is kind of okay.
TLDR; I want it (16 second delay) but don't need it, money or pedal?

Well, I don't think taking it and selling it would be such a huge dick move if you tried to use it for a good length of time and ultimately decided you needed the money in like, a year? I agree it would be uncool if you took it and flipped next week.
It's a tricky one I'll give you that.

Yeah that would be okay, I don't think he'll be holding it over me if I decide I no longer want it in the future, but as you say, doing it next week in a blatant cash grab would be uncool, but I'm specifically not doing that.
It's one of those items that once I owned it, I'd probably sell just about anything
but it to keep it as it's harder to replace anyway.

I hope this doesn't make me a dick
But it wouldn't be a dick move if you chose to use the cash he pays however you wish so I'm not quite understanding why it would matter if you turnaround and sold it? Or maybe I don't understand the motivation he has in paying you with gear instead of cash? Is it a nice gesture on his part or is he short on cash?
Anyway, just my thoughts, no worries. I swear I try not to be a dick

What a dic...
No, I expressed interest in getting one in the past to him and so he's offering it as a favour to me as a thank you for all the work on his gear at mates rates.

the thing is, if you really could do with the money (wooooooooo lockdown) it's going to be shit, because as you've said, you're sitting on a big chunk of change in the pedal.
However, odds are you may never get to own one again without paid said stupid money, so I would say if you can swing it financially, take the pedal.

^^^^ that seems to be what you were talking yourself round to in the OP Scruffie. haha unless I misread the subtext
I'd take the pedal if I could afford it. But if you can't it is just a pedal

yup, pretty much and I'm pawning off my decision making to you guys.
Perhaps I can assuage my pedal guilt selling off some other stuff...

I’m pretty much here, but I don’t have the relationship with the guy that you do. If this isn’t a “here, hold my collateral until I have the cash” sort of deal, this is being offered as fair value for services rendered to close the debt. Yours to keep, sell, or destroy as it tickles you. But don’t destroy it.
Weird question: would it really tweak the guy in a way that fucks with your life if the 16SD doesn’t work for you and you trade it for a deal on some gear that does work for you? Basically, are you accepting payment or baggage?
What to keep and what to sell of your gear is a more personal thing. Flip a couple more conventional and commonplace things that the 16SD steps into the place of, maybe, if you’re concerned you’d never get one again?

I have a hard time turning down gear, especially if it is something I've dreamed about already.
If you're not in the hole due to expensive parts acquisition (repairs can be ugly wormholes indeed) I'd say grab the gear if it's not putting you out on the street to do so.
A few weeks of ramen and pancakes never hurt anyone (okay, that's not entirely true, but you're probably on the better side of statistical anomaly).

Just give him dibs if you decide to flip it?

It's mine to keep and he's not adding strings, I'm adding the string as morally I would find it questionable to automatically flip it just to get more money, of course eventually if I don't bond with it, I'd be free to do as I please.
Eivind August wrote:Just give him dibs if you decide to flip it?
He already has one, it came in a bulk purchase of broken effects, plus if I was tied in to selling it back to him, then it would be an issue for me.
The taking it as payment isn't really the issue, I just wanted to be talked in taking the reckless mystery box instead of the cash prize

I didn't come here for sound financial advice

Yeah one of them was expensive to repair, I was surprised how much some of the vintage digital chips cost now, but that's factored in to it.
It's more that I should be saving the money for adulting
