Hey guys. I’m looking to find a fuzz that’d work well for synths. Specifically a Behringer TD-3 (TB-303 clone).

Just curious if anyone has any good suggestions? Found a thread from a few years ago that mentioned the Mini and PLL based fuzzes being good for that stuff, but I’d like to know what else is out there and if anyone’s used these for acid stuff.

Are there any wavefolding fuzzes out there that I may not know about? I’d think something that wavefolds would be excellent for mangling a 303 into some crazy sounds.

This is a recommendation that is not specific to your 303. Lately I’ve been running various synths through fuzz a lot. Old digital drum machines, a Casio sk-5, and an analog four. So quite different to you. But still I’ve found some things to be true across all things. For a fuzz/distortion to push a synth through you want a good EQ and some nice range on the gain. I like the metal zone for this reason.

But also, just using all of the various high gain stuff I have through it is nice and fun. My guyatone tz-2 super fuzz clone has none of that stuff yet sounds pretty dope on a drum machine. As does the danelectro fab tone

What fuzzes do you have on hand and have tried already?

I'm a big fan of the SS/BS Pretty years on synths and although its not a fuzz the Meris Ottobit jr sounds really cool on synths as well. The bit crusher/filter combo on that thing is very fun and sounds great!

I’ve got an RMA Tetanus Booster which works well, but doesn’t shape the sound as much as what I’m after and a Codtone LAL Super Oscillo clone that does not work well with synths at all.

Yeah, the Tetanus Booster has little to no actual carving implementation, it's essentially just a line amplifier.

I'll give you a yell when I have a Mudlark or other build available to check out, synth support guides my intent to a large degree and it's always nice to get another set of ears in the feedback loop.

Oh hell yeah! Thank you! I would love to try out another RMA pedal. The tetanus has been a staple for me for guitar for the last 3 years lol.

Has anyone tried the Malekko Downer with synths before? Seems interesting since it’s supposed to be a wavefolding fuzz with a mix control.

I think octave fuzz can be very fun on synths. Brings out crazy harmonics

Has anyone tried, or can anyone try a Mountainking Decomposer and report back? I've only heard the youtube guitar and bass demos, but it sounds so broken I just have a feeling it's cool with synths.

i'd think that one necessary thing would be for the fuzz to work well with the square wave on a synth. you could get some great tones that way, as well as some awful ones no doubt. but the awful ones might be the most fun.

i think the key is to have a lot of gain. The rules are different from guitar so I'd recommend starting with some cheap ones you can find and see what you dig. While I am sure an earthbound audio pedal would sound awesome on synth, dropping 200$ on a fuzz for a synth makes little sense. Just gotta max out on that gain boi

totally agree. In my experience the most fun is had with just blasting high gain stuff. I don't find the fine tuning available on fancier fuzz pedals as useful for synths - unless you're trying to go for subtle overdrive/gritty sounds. For all out fuzz avoid subtlety, buy cheap high gain stuff, have fun.
